I spoke with a Rankin County Supervisor this morning regarding the rezoning sign posted at the residence on Oak Grove Drive. He explained that the request is seeking approval for the property to operate as a short-term rental, similar to an Airbnb.
A few weeks ago, I also spoke directly with the current property owner about his plans for the home. While I appreciate his willingness and promise to maintain the property and keep it looking nice, my concern extends beyond just this particular homeowner. My biggest concern is the precedent this could set for the future. If larger investment companies or property management groups — such as CONREX or similar companies — begin purchasing multiple homes within the neighborhood for short-term rental use, it could create much larger long-term issues for our community.
There are some potential benefits to this type of arrangement, including requirements for the property to meet certain maintenance standards such as yard upkeep, exterior appearance, and limited on-street parking. However, there are also concerns that come with a steady rotation of short-term guests, which could impact the sense of community within the neighborhood.
For residents who would like to share their thoughts or concerns, the contact information listed on the sign is available for public feedback.
At this time, the Oak Grove HOA does not support the rezoning request due to ongoing concerns related to parking, speeding, stop sign violations, and overall property maintenance within the neighborhood.
