Republicans are speeding this process with their slavish obedience to trump in his quest to bankrupt America.

In June 1974, Henry Kissinger flew to Saudi Arabia with a simple but extraordinary proposal. (https://capitalstreetfx.com/.../petrodollar-history-1974.../)
The arrangement Kissinger negotiated with King Faisal was this: Saudi Arabia would price all of its oil exclusively in US dollars, use its dominance within OPEC to ensure every other member did the same, and recycle the resulting dollar revenues back into American treasury bonds and military equipment.
In exchange, Washington would guarantee Saudi Arabia’s security.
…….
In June 2024, Saudi Arabia’s central bank quietly joined a project that most Western news outlets barely covered.
It became a full member of Project mBridge (https://www.ledgerinsights.com/saudi-joins-mbridge-cross.../)— a cross-border digital currency settlement system developed alongside China, the UAE, Hong Kong, and Thailand.
mBridge allows participating central banks to settle international payments directly using their own digital currencies, bypassing the US dollar and the SWIFT system entirely.
…..
Around 80% of global oil trade is still settled in dollars today.
That number was 95% twenty years ago. The shift is slow. But the direction is consistent and it is not reversing.
What makes Saudi Arabia’s position particularly significant is that Riyadh is not doing this out of ideological opposition to America. This is not Russia or Iran trying to break the Western order. Saudi Arabia remains deeply tied to American military hardware, American financial markets, and American diplomatic support. What MBS is doing is something more pragmatic and, from Washington’s perspective, harder to push back against: he is hedging. Building leverage. Making sure that in a world where US power is contested and US reliability is questioned, Saudi Arabia has somewhere else to go if it needs to.

Fifty years later, Riyadh is quietly building a future where the dollar is no longer indispensable.

LETS THANK THE REPUBLICAN PARTY FOR THIS

The EU is not impressed with the U.S. making financial interventions that damage its position, yet they are, as Canada is, becoming used to America no longer being even a friend, but an actual threat. What is interesting is that the largest American corporations are not blind. They see that buying Euros and investing in Canada and Europe are major hedges to what it seems is now inevitable within the U.S.A.

And let’s face it, if one looks at the list of foreign holders of American securities (above in this article) one can see that what Japan and Korea have started, could well result in a rout for the U.S. bond market as more than 8 trillion dollars could well be dumped back into the lap of debt being added to the tax liability of American taxpayers, spiralling bond yields into the stratosphere (and we are watching it happen in real time this week) and massively increasing the cost of borrowing for the U.S. Canada just dumped 58 billion of U.S. treasuries as well, and de-dollarization is fuelling an increase in nations buying gold.

All of this is bad news for the U.S. bond market, and we’re only at the beginning of what could become the biggest structural change in economics since World War II.
