FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Overnight Structure Fire at East Main Street Businesses

At approximately 12:45 a.m., the Branford Fire Department responded to 223 East Main Street in Branford for a reported wires down incident.

Arriving crews from Engine 1 encountered primary electrical wires down and actively arcing in the roadway, along with smoke and fire visible from the side of the building extending into the attic space. Due to the conditions found, the incident was immediately upgraded to a structure fire response.

The building housed several occupancies including Baby Bones Barbershop, a day spa business, a vacant commercial space, and a residential occupancy.

Occupants self-evacuated after reportedly being awakened by a transformer explosion.

Witnesses stated they observed an unknown vehicle drive over the downed electrical wires and continue dragging them down the roadway, causing significant arcing before leaving the scene. Video footage obtained by investigators confirmed the account.

The Branford Fire Department reminds the public that driving over or near downed utility wires is extremely dangerous and potentially deadly. All downed wires should be treated as energized, and individuals should immediately notify 911 and avoid the area.

Fire crews forced entry into the structure and conducted an aggressive interior attack, successfully extinguishing the attic fire from below while protecting the adjoining barber shop and residential occupancies from significant damage.

The day spa business and the vacant commercial space sustained significant fire, smoke, and water damage and will remain closed pending repairs. The barber shop and residential occupancy remained occupied.

Responding units included Engines 1, M.P. Rice Hose Co 2, and 9, Truck 1, Medic 1, and Cars 1, 6, and 9. Stony Creek Rescue Fire Company 5 responded to provide station coverage and also handled an additional emergency incident during the operation. Guilford Fire Department responded to the scene as the Rapid Intervention Team.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

In addition to this incident, the Branford Fire Department responded to 10 other emergency calls overnight.

Ok, ok… maybe that’s not entirely true, and maybe instead someone forgot something in the toaster.

We’re not calling anyone out by name, but it rhymes with Ronathan.

Shout out BFD for your prompt response time and professionalism, and getting our folks back to their lunches! We will do better 🤦🏻‍♂️

And shout out to the awesome customers for making the best of it and staring their outdoor picnics early with us.

Who knows, might be the only weather permitting picnic this weekend 🤷🏻‍♂️

The Branford Fire Department is proud to recognize providers who were invited to the 2026 Yale-CEMS EMS Week Celebration, honoring extraordinary care provided during three separate cardiac arrest incidents in 2025 that resulted in patients making full recoveries and returning home to their families.

These successful outcomes are the result of exceptional clinical care, teamwork, training, composure under pressure, and the dedication our personnel bring to every response. This event brought together more than 250 EMS providers, survivors, and family members to recognize the lifesaving work taking place across our region.

One of the most meaningful moments of the event was having one of the survivors in attendance. After suffering a cardiac arrest while visiting his wife at a nursing facility, he was successfully resuscitated by responding crews and was able to join the celebration in person — a powerful reminder of why this work matters.

We are proud to recognize the following Branford Fire Department members for their role in these saves:

Incident 1 on 8/4/2025:
James Carson
Jason Karpovich

Incident 2 on 12/11/2025:

Incident 3 on 2/11/2025:
