National Dog Day belongs to the dogs. K9 Rico and K9 Recon made sure their entrance matched the occasion.🐾

Today, we’re celebrating these highly trained partners and the important work they do alongside their handlers to help protect our officers and community. Rico and Recon are still on duty, but National Dog Day calls for a few extra treats and a well-earned moment in the spotlight.

This catastrophic event is simply unimaginable for them, as well as our brothers and sisters in their Missouri State Highway Patrol family. Please joining us in keeping the Hendersons, the Missouri State Highway Patrol, and the other families affected by this tragedy in your thoughts and prayers.

School starts next week, and Branson’s roads are about to get a whole lot busier! 🚌🎒

As students head back to class, you’ll see more school buses making stops, more kids waiting along the road and more activity in school zones. A little extra attention behind the wheel can make a big difference.

Here’s your back-to-school bus safety refresher:

🔴 Two-lane roads: Drivers traveling in BOTH directions must stop when a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended, including roads with a center turn lane.
🟡 Four-lane roads: Only vehicles traveling behind the bus are required to stop. Drivers coming from the opposite direction should continue with caution and stay alert.

And remember:
✅ Never pass a stopped school bus with flashing red lights
✅ Keep an eye out for students near bus stops and crosswalks
✅ Slow down in school zones
✅ Put the distractions away and give yourself a few extra minutes

New backpacks. New routines. Lots of excited students. Let’s make sure getting to and from school is the safest part of their day.

The 9th Annual Branson Citizens Police Academy is officially underway! 🚔

Tonight, Chief Schmitt welcomed our newest class and kicked off several weeks of learning, hands-on experiences and a behind-the-scenes look at the Branson Police Department.

Throughout the academy, participants will step beyond what they see from the outside and get a closer look at the people, training and responsibilities behind the badge.

We’re excited to have this group with us and look forward to sharing their Citizens Police Academy experience along the way!

Officer McCarty’s service is defined by more than the calls he answers. It is defined by the people he refuses to give up on.

He takes the time to listen, understand and look beyond the immediate crisis to help people find a path forward. That same compassion extends to his fellow first responders, where he has become a trusted source of support during some of the most difficult moments of the job.

K9 Rico has a few back-to-school rules of his own: No chewing on pencils. Stay out of the trash. And always listen to your teacher.

He also has an important reminder for parents before those first-day photos hit social media.

Those adorable back-to-school boards can sometimes share more information than you realize. Consider leaving off details like your child’s full name, school, teacher’s name or other identifying information.

Keep it simple with a first name, year and a fun fact, or save the more detailed photos for family and friends.

A great first day starts with a little safety, and Rico gives that lesson two paws up. 🐾

The countdown to the first day of school is on! 🎒🚌

With students heading back to class next week, now is a great time for drivers to get ready for the return of busy school zones and school-day traffic.

Branson Police is reminding everyone to slow down in school zones, watch closely for students walking or biking, be prepared for school buses making frequent stops and always follow the direction of school resource officers and crossing guards.

A little extra attention behind the wheel can help make sure everyone starts the school year safely.
