The Brattleboro Selectboard will be hosting a listening session to begin the FY27 budgeting process on Thursday, Sept. 11 from 6:15 to 8 p.m. at Brooks Memorial Library. This is an opportunity for the public to share their ideas directly with the Selectboard outside the typical meeting format.

Sounds like we can hold off on the picket with the bus drivers for the moment! The Brattleboro Reformer has reported that the lockout on the bus drivers has been dropped, and that the drivers are allowed back to work! This is good news for families, children (who will see the faces of the bus drivers they know and that know the routes), and good for the drivers who can work while contract negotiations continue. The students will have their regular drivers back!

Happy Labor Day! As billionaires try to take over our country, this is a critical moment to stand with working people. Will you join us tomorrow, Tuesday, September 2, outside Brattleboro Union High School at 7:30am to stand with our school bus drivers and monitors?

Kuzmeskus, which is owned by an out-of-state private-equity firm, has locked out school bus drivers and monitors for the Windham Southeast district. It has been chaos for students and families, with scab drivers who don’t know our community or our streets. Teamsters Local 597 and community supporters are picketing to get Kuzmeskus to go back to the table, stop the lockout, and get our bus drivers back to work. I'll be there bright and early tomorrow morning. Will you join us?

The day before Gov. Phil Scott’s visit to Windham County two weeks ago, President Trump wrote on social media, “The Homeless have to move out, IMMEDIATELY,” as he deployed the National Guard to Washington, D.C. and vowed to forcibly remove unhoused people from our nation’s capital.

This summer, here in Vermont, we have seen our state government remove families with young children and senior citizens with oxygen tanks from motels, without a plan for a safe place for these Vermonters to go.

Vermont must do better and lead with compassion.

In past instances, Gov. Scott’s administration has rushed to stand up emergency shelters, including one last year in Brattleboro that no one used and that wasted taxpayer dollars. Advance planning with input from local providers could make a world of difference. We have skilled and knowledgeable organizations here in Brattleboro like Groundworks, HCRS, End Homelessness Vermont, and Southeastern Vermont Community Action (SEVCA). These organizations, and others, have the expertise, data, and lived experience to guide more effective solutions.

This month the mayor of Burlington and I have both publicly called on Governor Phil Scott to coordinate with our communities in addressing the current situation. He should speak directly with the providers, municipal staff, and people with lived experience, listen to their recommendations, and work collaboratively to take a humane and effective approach to ensuring all of our safety as the cold months approach.
