FIND AND MAP INVASIVES ON YOUR PROPERTY
Sunday, June 14, noon - 2:00 pm
Guilford, VT

Could you map the invasive species on your property without leaving the couch? WRWA is joining the Vermont Woodlands Association (VWA) in co-hosting a woods walk led by consulting forester (and WRWA President) Andrew Morrison, at a Tree Farm in Guilford, VT. We will learn to identify invasive species growing on the property including: Bittersweet, Buckthorn, Japanese Barberry, Autumn Olive and others. Following this walk you will be able to use your knowledge of what habitats New England's invasive plants love best, to simplify mapping their presence on your property. Then you can use these maps to generate a more effective plan to protect and restore your property's forest habitats.

We'll practice on an aerial map of the landowners property but if you're interested you can provide your address ahead of time and we'll work to get you an aerial map of your own property.
VWA is handling the registration for this free event. Pre-registration is required. The exact location will be shared with registered participants. Register at vermontwoodlands.org by navigating to the Upcoming Events page.

It's Day 4, the final day, of the Windham County City Nature Challenge and there's still time on this beautiful day to get out and make observations!
Just over a third of the 343 observations uploaded so far have been identified by a second iNaturalist user. If you want to help out with the identification to move as many observations as possible to Research Grade, you can do some ID work at home, or join a few of us in the Community Room at Brooks Memorial Library tomorrow evening (4/28), starting at 7 pm for a collaborative ID session!

It's Day 3 of the Windham County City Nature Challenge, part of the 4 day global City Nature Challenge, and we've got observations of 149 species, mostly plants, but also insects, birds, amphibians, fungi - and one lone mammal - from all over the county!
Here's a few of the species we've documented, as well as a map and stats of observations so far.
It isn't too late to join the project!

It's Day 1 of the Windham County City Nature Challenge and we're off to a good start. The global CNC goal is to observe and identify as many species as possible. Here in Windham County, our goal is to learn as much as we can about our ecosystems and the nature that surrounds us - in our own yards, along the streets of our small towns, and in our fields and forests, streams, and ponds. So get out there and start making observations, then upload them to iNaturalist!

If you're new to iNaturalist or want to get better at using it, join us tomorrow:
10 am- 11 am at Brooks Memorial Library Community Room
(224 Main Street, Brattleboro, Vermont)
Followed by an ID Walk 12-1 pm
West River Park (333 West River Road, Brattleboro, VT)

If you like using plant ID apps, but sometimes get frustrated by their limitations, maybe it's time to join iNaturalist!
You can download the app for iPhones and Android phones. Here's a guide to getting started.

iNaturalist is a global community of nature lovers and scientists sharing information about the plants, fungi, birds, and other organisms we find in the wild. It's also a global database of wild organisms, with identification tools - and with a way for other users to help out with IDs. Locally, we use it to learn about the spread of invasive plants and to help monitor our populations of native plants, pollinators, and other wild species.
The photos are from iNaturalist maps of local observations. You could add to our knowledge of these and other species!

Earth Day was yesterday and the Windham County City Nature Challenge begins tomorrow, running from April 24-27. What better way to top off Earth Week than to join the 2026 Windham County City Nature Challenge. There’s so much nature to be found in our back yards, along the streets of our small towns, and in our fields and forests, streams, and ponds. To participate, just make observations of plants, animals, or fungi you see in your backyard, your school yard, strolling on a trail, or on a walk along village or town streets in Windham County. Upload your observations to iNaturalist to help us document Windham County’s nature.
If you’re new to iNaturalist or want tips for making good observations, join us at our Saturday kickoff events!

Join us from April 24 to April 27 for the 2026 Windham County City Nature Challenge! Yes, the name seems like a misnomer here in Windham County, but we're taking part in a worldwide Nature Challenge that first began as a challenge between two cities.
There’s so much nature we can observe and document as citizen scientists - in our back yards, along the streets of our small towns, and in our fields and forests, streams, and ponds.
Come to the Kick-Off intro and observation walks on April 25, or if you're a seasoned iNaturalist user, just start making and uploading observations to iNaturalist any time from April 24-27. Then join the Identification team so we can get as many of our observations as possible to Research Grade.
Join the project here: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/city-nature-challenge-2026-windham-county-vt. Once on the project page, you will see an option to join the project. Just click and you're added to the team! (for folks new to iNaturalist, we'll post some beginners tips in the next few days)

It’s April, and time to tackle any garlic mustard that’s shown up in shady areas of your yard, before some of our native butterflies make the mistake of laying their eggs on the garlic mustard leaves. To learn more about this plant:
