🏛️ As we celebrate the 253rd Anniversary of the Windham County Sheriff’s Office, we wanted to share a piece of Windham County history.

When the Shire Town of Newfane moved from atop Newfane Hill to its current location in the Village, the Windham County Jail and County Courthouse were the first two structures erected on the Common in 1825. The land was donated by one of the founders of the Village of Newfane, and the original deed specified that the property could only be used for a courthouse, a jail, and a garden for the Sheriff. The jail served Windham County for nearly 150 years before ceasing operations as a correctional facility in 1971. Today, the building remains an important part of our county’s history and stands as a reminder of the long tradition of public service that continues through the Windham County Sheriff’s Office.

The historic jail building is now home to the Windham County Historical Society. If you've never had the opportunity to visit, we encourage you to stop by and explore this remarkable piece of Windham County's past. As we reflect on 253 years of service to the people of Windham County, we are reminded that preserving our history helps us better understand and appreciate the community we serve today.

And don't forget! On July 17, we will gather on this very same Common with the Vermont Superior Court to celebrate America's 250th Anniversary with the dedication of a community Time Capsule. We hope you'll join us as we honor our nation's past and leave a legacy for future generations.

Happy 253rd Anniversary, Windham County Sheriff's Office! 🎉
