MEET LIVE BIRDS OF PREY FROM VINS on Tuesday, June 23, 6:30pm in the Main Reading Room at the Brooks Memorial Library!

What did 65 million years of evolution turn the dinosaurs into? Birds!

Celebrating “Unearth a Story,” the Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS) is excited to introduce you to some live birds of prey and learn all about their dinosaur ancestry together. We’ll explore the ways modern birds became masters of the air, and understand the immense timescale over which these dinosaur-descendants adapted!

Free and open to all ages. No registration is required.

Financial Empowerment: Preventing and Overcoming Fraud

Join us for a discussion about how to prevent and overcome fraud with SEVCA and Mascoma Bank.

Financial Q & A with SEVCA and Mascoma Bank

All are welcome to these programs, held on the 4th Mondays of the month throughout 2026, with different topics for each session and peer support encouraged throughout. Representatives from SEVCA and Mascoma Bank facilitate the discussions, share their expertise, and respond to individual questions and concerns. A light meal will be served at 5:30PM; the focused conversation starts at 6:00 PM.

Art & Exploration - With the Library: the fourth iteration of our collaborative program with River Gallery School and Bradley House started this past week, with a fun-filled exploration of RGS's signature medium, Sequencing, along with art books specially curated for this day's theme: landscapes.

For this last series supported by a Creative Aging Grant from The Vermont Arts Council, we are thrilled to be welcomed to the sunny activity room at Garden Path Elder Living's Bradley House, which has its own stunning landscape for a backdrop! Community members are welcome to join us there. You can register at Brooks' circulation desk. These classes are FREE, and open to the aging population in Windham County.

The Sci-Fi Reading Group will meet in the Quiet Reading Room to discuss Dawn by Octavia E. Butler!

When Lilith lyapo wakes from a centuries-long sleep, she finds herself aboard the vast spaceship of the Oankali. She discovers that the Oankali—a seemingly benevolent alien race—intervened in the fate of the humanity hundreds of years ago, saving everyone who survived a nuclear war from a dying, ruined Earth and then putting them into a deep sleep. After learning all they could about Earth and its beings, the Oankali healed the planet, cured cancer, increased human strength, and they now want Lilith to lead her people back to Earth—but salvation comes at a price.

Please note that this SFRG will be meeting on the fourth Monday of the month! The Sci-Fi Reading Group typically meets the third Monday of every month and is open to curious minds of all ages, whether or not they’ve read this month’s selection.

The Town of Brattleboro and the Board of Trustees of the Brooks Memorial Library seek a Library Director to guide and inspire our community’s public library and continue its tradition of excellent community service.

The Library Director manages the day-to-day operations of the library, including collections, programs, budgets, and staff, serving as the primary public representative for the library. The Director also works in close cooperation with and has accountability to the Board of Library Trustees in accordance with 22 V.S.A. §143, serving as its advisor and as an active participant in policy and budget development, goal setting, planning, and evaluation, in accordance with policies established by the Town and the Board. The Board delegates to the Director full authority in such areas as collection development, budget management, and personnel administration, selection, and supervision.

The Director is responsible for the effective delivery of services to the community, assessing the community’s needs and interests. The Director is responsible for planning, directing, coordinating, supervising, and staffing all activities of the department and training its personnel. The Director is also responsible for its continued and efficient operation, including the department’s relations with the public, local government, and other related agencies. The Director is accountable for enforcement of rules, policies and regulations within the department, creating a climate where people want to contribute their best; and is able to motivate, create, and maintain a friendly knowledgeable team.

We are kicking off the Adult Summer Reading Program with Rapid Reviews of 50 books in 50 minutes! Experience a wide range of book recommendations from our well-read library staff to get ready for a spectacular summer of reading.

Five reviewers will review some of their all-time favorites.

Each reviewer will give 60-second reviews of each book and you will have the opportunity to check out these books right away! Cookies and milk will be served. All ages are welcome.

The Country in the Mirror: Poems of Protest and Witness

Poets and editor Sharon Darrow will be reading from “The Country in the Mirror: Poems of Protest & Witness,” published by Rootstock Publishing.

Would you like to read a poem on the themes of protest and witness at the event? There will be an open mic sign up sheet on a first come, first served basis.

“Including nearly ninety poets from across the United States and Canada, The Country in the Mirror: Poems of Protest & Witness is an urgent anthology of poems written in response to these troubling times. It is comprised of a variety of voices, from new writers to well-seasoned poets who are widely published and celebrated, such as Martín Espada, Nikki Grimes, Rachel Hadas, Gregory Maguire, Bianca Stone, among others. The poems explore a myriad of issues related to immigration, detention, civil rights, climate change, rising fascism, global wars, genocide, abortion, LGBTQIA+ experiences and more.

This collection holds a mirror to our diversity, our freedom of expression, and our collective humanity to remind us of the liberties we have as Americans, and to caution of their loss.”
