It's that time of year again! Brattlegrow compost and topsoil mix are available at WSWMD for purchase and pick up. ~30lb bags of 1/2" screened compost go for $7 and our bags of topsoil mix are $10. Bulk compost can be purchased for $55/cubic yard and topsoil mix for $65. If you purchase more than 10 yards from WSWMD you can get it at whole sale price.

You can also find Brattlegrow compost at any of our distributors and some of them truly deliver! Allen Brothers Farm, Boyd Family Farm, D & E Tree, Maple Hill Nursery, or Renaud Tree. Give them a call to pick up or have your compost delivered and get a good start to your gardening season.

It is with great sadness that we have to report the loss of our scale master (not just your ordinary operator!) John Skip Bonnett, on March 16, following a prolonged illness. Skip joined WSWMD in January 2007 as a CDL truck driver and led the trucking team for over 10 years until WSWMD closed the MRF in 2018. In 2019, he was rehired to work full-time at the transfer station/scale house. He had been working part-time for the past six months. We are all feeling the loss and will miss him dearly. There was only one Skip. We love you. R.I.P Skip ❤️

Spring is on its way... WSWMD has a few tools in our inventory that might help you to save food scraps now in order to invest in the land later!

We have kitchen countertop food scrap containers, lovingly known as Kitchen Caddies. These hard plastic pails are easy to clean, have snapping lids with small enough holes to keep flies out, minimize odor, and are a wise addition to your kitchen space. At $10 a pop this is a durable and easy to use tool for collecting the odds and ends from your cutting board and plate scrapings. You can use any type of container for collecting food scraps and this one is an affordable and conveniently sized vessel to keep in mind. To reduce the ick-factor you can put a thin layer of newspaper in the bottom or line it with a certified-for-home-composting bag (like TUV or BPI… "home" should be on the bag label). For added fruit fly/house fly protection, store it in your freezer if you have room so there's no chance of those kitchen pests making you frown.

After food scraps are collected from the kitchen, where should they go? I find it useful to store food scraps in a 5 gallon bucket with a sealable lid before I add it to my outdoor compost system or taking it to a drop-off. At home, adding food scraps in higher volumes helps to generate heat in your pile or tumbler. Just make sure that every time you add your food scraps, no matter how little or how much, you cover it with a good dose of carbon-rich material like straw, leaves, wood shavings, etc. 2-3 times more carbon than food scraps/plant matter should do the trick.

Speaking of outdoor compost systems… we've got some of those too! WSWMD is happy to provide these tools at a lower price than you might find online.

Check out this link to see the different types of backyard composters we have in stock: https://windhamsolidwaste.org/resources/composting/bins-kitchen-pails/

Stay tuned for compost workshops that will take place once the snow melts off WSWMD's compost demonstration area!
