Clay County Declares Local Disaster Emergency and Issues Travel Advisory Warning Clay County, Indiana — Due to severe winter weather conditions impacting the county, the Clay County Board of Commissioners has declared a Local Disaster Emergency and issued a Travel Advisory Warning (RED) effective immediately.
Clay County has experienced heavy snowfall, dangerously cold temperatures, and hazardous road conditions, creating a serious risk to public safety. Snow accumulation, drifting, reduced visibility, icy roadways, and extreme cold have made travel unsafe across much of the county. These conditions also limit emergency response capabilities and impede access to essential services.
A Travel Advisory Warning (RED) is the highest level of local travel advisory. During a Travel Warning:
Travel is restricted to emergency management workers and emergency personnel only.
All residents are directed to refrain from all non-essential travel.
Citizens are asked to cooperate fully with public safety officials and comply with all emergency measures
Vehicles parked or abandoned on public roadways may be subject to removal to allow snow removal operations and emergency response vehicles to safely operate.
This declaration allows Clay County to activate emergency response plans, coordinate resources, and take necessary actions to protect life and property while crews continue snow removal and recovery efforts.
Residents are urged to: Stay off roadways unless absolutely necessary.
Monitor local media and official county communication channels for updates.
Check on elderly neighbors or those with special needs, if it can be done safely.
The Local Disaster Emergency Declaration may remain in effect for up to seven (7) days, unless modified or extended in accordance with Indiana law.
For emergency situations, dial 9-1-1. For non-emergency needs, residents should contact local authorities through normal channels.
Additional updates will be provided as conditions change.
