The purpose of the WIC program is to provide nutritional support during critical times of growth and development, to improve health, and achieve positive health outcomes. The purpose for the nutrition assessment process is to identify nutritional needs of the participant. WIC is a partnership between the WIC staff and you working to achieve positive health outcomes through open conversation. WIC f

ood benefits are given to promote and support the nutritional well-being of you and your child. Each participant must reapply at the end of the certification period and be reassessed for program eligibility. If You Breast or Chest Feed Your Baby, You'll Get More From WIC! Breast and chest feeding parents get a greater amount and variety of food. Lactating parents are eligible for WIC benefits for up to one year. People who choose not to breast or chest feed are eligible for only six months postpartum. Breastfeeding moms are in a higher priority group than non-breastfeeding moms. Help and support are available to lactating people 24/7 by trained peer counselors.

👶I Am Your Baby.❤️
🐌When I’m about 6 months old, I can start to eat solid foods. Please go slowly. 🐢

If our family has allergies or I was born early, talk to my healthcare provider or WIC before I start solid foods.

🥣Make My First Food a Single Food🥄
Give me only one new food at a time. This helps me adjust to new foods.
I might eat about a teaspoon to start with and then more as I get used to eating from a spoon or picking up foods.
Continue to offer me a variety of foods and textures from different food groups.
🚨Watch for signs of food allergies like trouble breathing, throwing up, diarrhea, skin rash, or swelling. If I have a reaction to a new food, call my healthcare provider or take me to the emergency room.🚑

🥜Introducing Peanut Butter🥜

After I have tried other solid foods, introduce me to peanut butter. Doing this can be helpful if our family has food or egg related allergies, like eczema or other skin issues.

Spread a small, thin smear of peanut butter thinly on a cracker or mix it with applesauce and offer it on a spoon. Watch me for the next 2 hours to make sure I don’t have a reaction.🚨

In the early days, it can be difficult for new parents to tell whether their baby is feeding effectively. Immediately after birth, diaper counts and stool color can give us important clues about how feeding is going. Once colostrum becomes transitional (and later mature) milk, there are three key things we look for in newborns: diaper output, audible swallowing, and visible swallowing.
