BEDC Advances Largest Development Initiative in Organization’s History, Prioritizing Safe and Efficient Access
The Breckenridge Economic Development Corporation (BEDC) is proud to announce active planning efforts, in coordination with the City of Breckenridge, for the development of approximately 33 acres of land located north of Walmart—marking what is anticipated to be the largest and most impactful project in the organization’s history.
This transformative development represents a significant step forward in Breckenridge’s long-term growth strategy, designed to address the housing challenge by supporting diverse housing options, enhancing quality of life, and strengthening the community’s economic foundation.
This project represents a significant opportunity to attract new investment, support population growth, and position Breckenridge for long-term economic success.
“The economic impact of this development will benefit all residents of Breckenridge by expanding our tax base which contributes to a lower tax rate and is in alignment with one of our goals to diversify our housing options in Breckenridge. We appreciate BEDC’s leadership to work in cooperation with all our partners,” said Mayor Bob Sims.
The property has already been annexed into the City of Breckenridge, and preliminary evaluations indicate that infrastructure connectivity and long-term sustainability have been carefully reviewed and are well-positioned to support responsible development. These early steps position the project for efficient progression while ensuring alignment with the City’s Comprehensive Development Plan for future growth.
As part of this effort, BEDC has formally invited the Breckenridge Independent School District (BISD) to consider a potential partnership involving approximately 14 acres for a future elementary school site. In addition, discussions have included shared participation in critical infrastructure improvements, including a lift station, to support both educational and mixed use development in the area.
Conceptual planning for the site reflects a broader vision of a mixed-use environment, including residential opportunities, neighborhood connectivity, and quality-of-life amenities. This type of development is expected to serve as a catalyst for additional private investment and long-term community vitality.
BEDC leadership emphasized that safe and efficient access remains a top priority. The organization is committed to working with TxDOT and the City of Breckenridge throughout the planning process. Multiple access and traffic flow options are currently being evaluated to ensure the development supports both future residents and the safe movement of families - particularly during school-related pick-up and drop-off times.
“Breckenridge is on the verge of doing something truly unique in the region surrounding Abilene,” said Michael Paris, CEO and Executive Director of the Breckenridge Economic Development Corporation. “This development positions our community for meaningful residential growth, bringing new rooftops that help drive stronger traffic counts and increase our ability to attract retail and new investment. At the same time, it enhances quality of life and strengthens tourism by better connecting people to the many unique assets and experiences we already have. It’s about building momentum and creating a place where people want to live, visit, and invest.”
At this stage, planning and due diligence efforts are ongoing, and BEDC continues to explore all viable options to ensure the project is executed in a way that reflects the priorities and character of Breckenridge.
Further updates will be provided as the project advances.
