Town of Breckenridge Open Space and Trails The OST program preserves lands and trails through acquisition and stewardship efforts.

The Open Space & Trails program was founded in 1997, one year after Breckenridge citizens elected to pass a permanent 0.5% sales tax measure to fund an open space program. Since its inception, the program has acquired and protected over 5,000 acres of open space and has constructed and continues to maintain over 65 miles of trails throughout the Upper Blue River Watershed. The program also manages

for forest health and fuels reduction, restores impaired streams and wetlands, and controls weeds and noxious species on open space. Additionally, the program researches wildlife and monitors water quality in managing Cucumber Gulch Preserve, the crown jewel of the open space program and wildlife preserve with a unique rare fen wetland system of high biodiversity. The program is overseen by the Breckenridge Open Space Advisory Commission (BOSAC) and the Breckenridge Town Council. The success of the open space program is dependent upon the many people who make our work possible, including the residents and visitors who experience our open spaces and trail network, our conservation and community partners, volunteers, Town staff, the Breckenridge Open Space Advisory Commission, and the Breckenridge Town Council.

🍂 Heading to Aspen Alley for fall colors? Plan ahead! 🍂

To protect the trail, reduce congestion, and make your trip stress-free, a free seasonal shuttle will run daily for Aspen Alley this fall!

Dates: Sept 12 – Oct 3, 2026
Hours: 7:00 AM – 8:00 PM daily
Route: Continuous loops between the Breckenridge Ice Rink & Wakefield Trailhead

Parking Guidance:
• Primary: Park at the Breckenridge Ice Rink / Illinois Creek TH to catch the shuttle.
• Overflow: Park free at the South Gondola Lot, hop on the Free Ride town bus to the Ice Rink, and transfer.
Note: Wakefield TH is closed to general parking (2 ADA spaces only).

Want to skip the shuttle? You can hike directly from the Ice Rink to the trailhead via the Illinois Creek or Southside trails (~1 mile each way).

TRAIL NOTICE & VOLUNTEER DAY ON SAWMILL TRAIL

This Saturday, August 8th, the Friends of Breckenridge Trails team will be conducting a volunteer trail maintenance day on the Sawmill Trail! We’ll be working on trail restoration, pulling invasive weeds, building buck-and-rail fencing, and giving this well-loved trail some TLC from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

⚠️ Trail Advisory: The Sawmill Trail will remain open during work hours, but we highly encourage trail users to choose alternate routes or trails between 9 AM and 1 PM to help keep both our volunteer crew and trail users safe.

Join the Friends of Breckenridge Trails this coming Saturday, August 8th, for a restoration day on the Sawmill Trail!

This well-loved trail could use a little TLC, and it takes our awesome community to keep Breck’s trail network in top shape. Whether you're a seasoned trail volunteer or brand new to trail work, come get your hands dirty and make a lasting impact on Sawmill Trail!

What we’ll be doing:
Building buck-and-rail fencing to prevent trail braiding
Limbing brush and pulling invasive weeds
Hands-on restoration work to improve the trail experience for everyone

Say hello to Breckenridge's newest public art project.

Local artist Ryan "Rutherford" Sowers has been chosen to transform the Coyne Valley Road underpass, north and south entrances plus the tunnel interior, into a colorful gateway for cyclists and pedestrians. Installation kicks off late this summer.

The project came out of a partnership between Breck Create and , with 12 artists submitting proposals before the Public Arts Commission landed on Sowers' design.
