The Hwy 180 bridge over Hubbard Creek Lake will be closed for repairs Monday through Friday, April 27 - May 1.

The safety of the citizens of Stephens county and Breckenridge is our top priority. during this closure, mutual aid agreements and temporary response procedures are in place to ensure continued emergency services for the residents on the west side of the bridge.

Constable McMullen dedicated his life to serviceβ€”serving with professionalism, humility, and an unwavering commitment to the citizens of Stephens County. His career in law enforcement reflected integrity, compassion, and a steady presence that earned the respect of his colleagues and the community he served.
On this anniversary, we pause to honor his life, his service, and the lasting impact he made on those who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him. While he is deeply missed, his legacy of service continues to be remembered throughout our agency and community.
We extend our continued thoughts and prayers to his family, friends, and all who continue to feel this loss.

The Stephens County Sheriff’s Office and the Office of Emergency Management are implementing plans in response to the temporary closure of the Hubbard Creek Lake Bridge on U.S. Highway 180 by the Texas Department of Transportation next week.

At the request of the Breckenridge Fire Chief and Stephens County Fire Marshal Malcolm Bufkin, the burn ban for Stephens County has been lifted.

Residents in unincorporated areas of the county who plan to burn are strongly encouraged to contact the Breckenridge Fire Department before burning. This helps first responders know your location, allows for quicker response if needed, and prevents unnecessary deployment of emergency resources to known, controlled burns.

Stephens County Activates Emergency Operations Center and Opens Warming Center Ahead of Winter Weather Event

Stephens County officials have activated the Emergency Operations Center and county emergency resources in preparation for the anticipated winter weather event expected to impact the area.

County leadership, emergency management, and partner agencies are actively coordinating response efforts to ensure public safety and continuity of essential services. An activation meeting is scheduled for Friday morning, January 23rd, 2026, at which time officials will review conditions, finalize operational plans, and coordinate next steps as the weather event unfolds.

As part of these preparations, Stephens County will open a Warming Center at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January 23rd, located at:

210 East Dyer
Breckenridge, Texas

The Warming Center will be available to residents who may need a safe, warm location during the winter weather conditions.

Stephens County is working in close coordination with the City of Breckenridge, the Texas Department of Transportation, Stephens Memorial Hospital, Breckenridge Independent School District, and first responders across Stephens County to monitor conditions, prepare response assets, and provide timely updates to the public.
Residents are encouraged to remain weather-aware, take appropriate precautions, and follow official county communications and trusted local media outlets for updates as the situation develops.
