🪙 FUN FACT FRIDAY!

Did you know the Breckenridge mining district produced millions of dollars worth of gold during Colorado’s mining boom?

Gold was discovered here in 1859, and prospectors quickly flooded into the area. What started with individual miners and gold pans eventually grew into an enormous mining industry—with tunnels, mills, dredges, and thousands of people working to get the gold out of the mountains.

And here's the fun part:

Some of the gold that started Breckenridge's story came from the very ground beneath your feet. ⛏️ So the next time you're walking around Breck, remember—you might be standing on a piece of Colorado mining history.

Want to see where the hard-rock miners actually worked? Come underground with us at Country Boy Mine!

Ever wonder where all the cool artifacts in our museum come from? 👀⛏️

The answer is simple: right here on the Country Boy Mine property!

Today, while checking out our upper tunnel portal, we uncovered this incredible haul of historic artifacts. From old boots and broken glass to other small pieces of mining history like drill steels; these items have been sitting on the mountain for decades, waiting to be rediscovered!!!

That’s one of the things that makes Country Boy Mine so special—the history isn’t just displayed in our museum… it’s still hiding all around us!

You never know what we might find next. 🥾⛏️

⛏️ "THROWBACK THURSDAY: When Breckenridge Went Dredging"

Before Breckenridge was known for ski lifts, après-ski, and packed Main Street, the Blue River was home to some seriously impressive mining machinery.

Beginning in the early 1900s, enormous floating dredges worked the valley looking for placer gold. By 1909, four dredges were operating in the Breckenridge district—and they left behind the familiar piles of rock and gravel that still shape parts of the valley today.

Two of these dredges are in this photograph. Country Boy Mine would be extreme right, and center frame.

Today, the dredges are gone—for the most part; but the mining history they left behind is still written across the landscape.

TOOLBOX TUESDAY 🛠️

Before pneumatic drills and modern mining equipment, breaking rock could take two men, a drill steel, and a whole lot of swinging.

Meet the double-jack—a heavy hammer used to drive hand-held drill steel into solid rock. One miner held the steel while his partner swung the hammer. Together, they drilled the holes needed for blasting. Or as miners call it "Drilling a round."

No batteries. No air compressors. Just rock, steel, and muscle. 💪⛏️

Think you could handle a shift underground? Come see the real tools—and the real mine—at Country Boy Mine in Breckenridge!

🔨 What happens behind the scenes at Country Boy Mine?

Keeping a historic mine safe and open to the public takes more than just a good tour guides! Our mining crew regularly performs maintenance, rehabilitation, and ground-control work to keep the workings in good condition.

We also undergo inspections by the State of Colorado to help ensure our mine meets required safety standards. From replacing timbers to maintaining walkways and equipment, a lot of work goes on behind the scenes to preserve the mine—and keep your visit safe.

Mining history takes work to preserve! ⛏️
