Final Update 8/10 at 2:50pm: I-70 is open in both directions at the Eisenhower Tunnel. Our thoughts are with the state trooper and the other individuals involved in this crash.
Update 8/10 at 2:20pm: I-70 Eastbound is now open at the tunnel (mm 213), and at Silverthorne (mm 205). I-70 West is still closed at the tunnel; westbound traffic is being diverted onto Hwy 6/Loveland Pass.

Crash Involving CSP Trooper Shuts Down I70 Both Directions
Four Cars Involved
(Clear Creek, CO) – Today, at approximately 10:46 a.m., a Colorado State Patrol Trooper was involved in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 70 mile marker 215, east of the Eisenhower Tunnel.
The initial findings of the investigation indicate that the Trooper, a K9 handler, was parked on the right shoulder of I-70 eastbound. The Trooper overheard on the radio that there was a car crash behind him in the westbound lanes. The Trooper activated his overhead emergency lights and began turning left across both lanes of traffic. A Subaru Forester that was traveling in the left lane of the eastbound lanes struck the driver's door of the patrol car. Both vehicles then traveled across the center median and slowly struck two vehicles in the westbound lanes. The last two vehicles were a white Chevrolet work truck and a white GMC Sierra.
The Trooper suffered injuries and was airlifted to a nearby hospital. He is undergoing evaluation and is expected to recover. The driver and passenger of the Subaru, an elderly couple, were transported by ground to a nearby hospital, with an unknown extent of injuries. The drivers of both pickup trucks suffered no injuries. The CSP K9, Buck, was transported to a veterinarian as a precautionary measure.

Update 8/10/ at 12:30pm: I-70 East is closed at Silverthorne (mm 205). Eastbound traffic caught between Silverthorne and the tunnel is currently being turned around at the tunnel. Westbound traffic is still being diverted onto Hwy 6/Loveland Pass at mm 216.
Update 8/10 at 12:06am: Correction: I-70 West is still closed at the tunnel; one lane was opened temporarily to allow traffic in the queue to clear. All westbound traffic is being diverted onto Hwy 6/Loveland Pass. Eastbound also remains closed at the tunnel.
Update 8/10 at 11:50am: One lane of I-70 West is now open at the Eisenhower Tunnel. Eastbound is still closed.
Update 8/10 at 11:11am: I-70 East is also closed at the Eisenhower Tunnel. All I-70 traffic is stopped at the tunnel. A Flight For Life Colorado helicopter will be landing at the tunnel.
Happening Now 8/10 at 10:55am: I-70 Westbound is closed at the Eisenhower Tunnel (mm 215) due to a crash. Westbound traffic will be diverted to Hwy 6/Loveland Pass, at mm 216.
