Taxpayer Tuesday, Week 3, and this one is the key that unlocks almost everything else in Ohio school finance: House Bill 920. Passed in 1976, it works like this: when property values rise, the tax rate on your voted school levies is automatically reduced so the district collects the same total dollars it collected when you approved the levy. It protects taxpayers from inflationary tax hikes, which is genuinely good. But it also means our revenue from existing levies is essentially frozen in time while our costs (salaries, utilities, buses, insurance) rise every year. That mismatch is why Ohio districts return to the ballot on a cycle. It's not poor planning; it's the architecture of the system. Full explanation on our website. This is the one article I'd ask every resident to read.

Taxpayer Tuesday, Week 2: Property Taxes 101. Property taxes are the single largest funding source for our schools, but let's be honest, the mechanics are confusing by design of history, not by anyone's intent. What's a mill? What's assessed value versus market value? Why doesn't your bill match the 'total millage' you see quoted? This week I break it all down with a simple example you can apply to your own home. Because you fund the majority of this district, you deserve to understand exactly how that math works. Full article on our website, and if your own tax bill still doesn't make sense afterward, contact me and we'll walk through it together.
