Healing on the High Seas ⚓️
Established in 1949, the Second Geneva Convention ensures the protection of military hospital ships and medical personnel. Today, U.S. Navy Medicine carries this proud legacy forward with ships like the USNS Mercy and USNS Comfort, deploying world-class medical care wherever it is needed most.

Protecting the Wounded at Sea 🏥⚓

On Aug.12, 1949, international delegates formally adopted the Second Geneva Convention, specifically protecting wounded, sick, and shipwrecked members of armed forces at sea.

This historic treaty established mandatory international protections for military hospital ships, medical transports, and healthcare personnel operating in combat zones. Today, U.S. Navy hospital ships like USNS MERCY T-AH 19 and USNS COMFORT T-AH 20 continue this proud tradition of global medical relief and humanitarian support.

Did you know Navy Medicine deploys world-class care on land and at sea? Comment if you have ever seen one of these ships at a Fleet or Navy Week.
