NBK-BANGOR – FORCES TO CONDUCT ON-WATER TEST OPERATIONS JUNE 22-25
Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock - Detachment Puget Sound, located at Naval Base Kitsap - Bangor, will conduct operations June 22 through June 25th on Hood Canal, in the vicinity of King Spit between Naval Base Kitsap Bangor and Seabeck. Operations will be conducted by a Navy barge propelled by a tugboat from the Wester Tugboat Company. The barge will moor in water greater than 100 feet deep and remain on location for the entire period. A 28-Foot tracking vessel will accompany the barge. The barge will deploy passive environmental sensors which will not interface with the canal bottom. This barge has operated previously in Hood Canal. The Navy has foul weather and other emergency plans in place for this evolution. U.S. Coast Guard has been notified of this activity. Navy environmental review of the test site concluded no known resources such as eel grass and shellfish will be sensitive to this test activity. The barge is self-contained. No wastewater or other fluids will be discharged. Test operations will not impede crab pot use or other fishing/harvesting. NBK-BANGOR – NBK SECURITY FORCES TO CONDUCT EXERCISES JUNE 22-26
Naval Base Kitsap Security Forces will be conducting training exercises at Olympic Pier from June 22-26, between the hours of 0900-1500. During this time, personnel can expect to receive ATHOC exercise messages, hear Giant Voice announcements, and observe training which may include swimmers, submersibles, and an increase in activity from Security Forces while responding to simulated emergencies. The Navy routinely conducts these types of training exercises, which ensure readiness and verify response procedures.

Through the Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program - SIOP, we are undertaking a comprehensive, long-term effort to reconfigure, optimize, and modernize Puget Sound Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility.

This includes the proposed construction of a new Multi-Mission Dry Dock - a multi-phase, mega-project culminating in a fully pressure-relieved dry dock facility capable of accommodating shipyard repair services for the new Ford-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, current Nimitz-class aircraft carriers, and other surface and subsurface ships.

NBK-BANGOR - MARITIME FORCE PROTECTION UNIT TO CONDUCT EXERCISES JUNE 12

Naval Base Kitsap's Maritime Force Protection Unit will be conducting training exercises on June 12, between the hours of 1000-1800. During this time, personnel on the installation can expect to receive ATHOC exercise messages, hear possible blank fire ammunition, and may observe an increase in activity from Security Forces while responding to simulated emergencies. The Navy routinely conducts these types of training exercises, which ensures readiness and verifies response procedures.

The U.S. Navy is hosting a public meeting today, June 4, from 4-6 p.m. related to the draft Environmental Assessment (EA) that analyzes the potential environmental impacts associated with building new infrastructure for the future homeporting of the Columbia-class submarine at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor (NBK-Bangor).

Community members can learn more about the EA and information for submitting public comments.

The public meeting will be located at the Best Western hotel in Silverdale.

NBK will support a three-day workshop from PACFLT called Total Sailor: Fit to Fight. This event facilitates face-to-face interactions with a team of subject matter experts. The goal is to discuss important resilience efforts while learning more about the quality of work and life along the waterfront and flight line. In addition to our Sailors and their families, please know that our civilian workforce is also very much welcomed to participate.

BE ADVISED:

Temporary roadway removal: SR 3 near Gorst scheduled to close June 13 for 16 days

Signed detours will help keep people moving around fish passage work.

GORST - A project to remove barriers to fish passage under State Route 3 South of Gorst is set to close the highway around the clock for 16 days.

From 7 a.m. Saturday, June 13, to 7 a.m. Monday, June 29, both directions of SR 3 will close near Sunnyslope Road Southwest. Signed detours will be provided for people who drive, walk, roll, or bike:

•Drivers will use Sunnyslope Road Southwest and Southwest Lake Flora Road.
• People who walk, roll or bike can use Northeast Old Belfair highway/West Belfair Valley Road.
• Commercial vehicles will be routed to SR 302 and SR 16.

The highway will remain open to residential and business travelers North and South of the closure, but no through traffic will be allowed.
