This week in 1933, USS Constitution – the oldest U.S. Navy warship still afloat – visited Seattle.

“Old Ironsides” was launched in 1797, and is most famous for her service in the War of 1812. She has been a museum ship since 1907.

In the early 1930s, USS Constitution underwent a substantial restoration. Following its completion, the ship and crew sailed on a three-year, 76-port tour intended as a public “thank you” to those who had supported the restoration effort.

In late May 1933, the historic frigate USS Constitution arrived in Seattle, touring Elliott Bay before being moored at Pier 41. In Seattle, she was open to the public for two weeks, and was toured by more than 200,000 visitors. Following her Seattle visit, she continued on to other Washington ports, including Bremerton.

After her tour, she returned home to Boston, where she has remained as a museum ship ever since.

These images show souvenirs from Constitution's west-coast visits in our artifact collection, including brochures and a wooden quarter.

This photograph from the Puget Sound Navy Museum’s collection was taken on May 29, 1919.

It features some of the rivet heaters and passers working at Bremerton’s Puget Sound Navy Yard just after the end of World War I.

The Shipyard’s workforce increased from 1,500 in early 1916 to more than 6,500 by late 1918 in support of the war effort.

Today is the Uniform Shift Date for Navy Region Northwest. That means that sailors will shift to their Dress Whites, swapping out the lighter uniform for the Dress Blues they’ve worn all winter. The white uniform is traditionally made of a lighter and more breathable fabric, making it better suited for warmer weather. They would both be worn to the same kinds of events, only differing in season.

Check out both versions of enlisted sailors’ dress uniforms in our exhibit “A Salute to Style: Fashion and the U.S. Navy”!

Memorial Day is a time to remember and honor those who have died while serving in the U.S. armed forces. It is because of their selfless contributions that battles are won and our nation continues to thrive in freedom.

On this day, we pause to pay our respects to the 1.1 million men and women who have died serving our country.

The Puget Sound Navy Museum will be open our usual hours of 10:00am to 4:00pm today.

Today is , and a great day to visit one of the many places that celebrate maritime history here in Washington State!

Did you know that there is a Maritime Washington National Heritage Area to help us tell the story of Washington’s maritime heritage? The Puget Sound Navy Museum is one of the anchor organizations for this effort spearheaded by the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation. It covers 3,000 miles of Washington State’s saltwater shoreline – which includes not only the Puget Sound Navy Museum, but also dozens of other museums, historic sites, and other opportunities to celebrate the state’s maritime industries, culture, and history.

The battleship USS Washington (BB 56) was commissioned 85 years ago today, on May 15, 1941. Our state’s namesake ship served for the entirety of World War II. During the war years, she visited the Puget Sound Navy Yard several times for repairs and refits. She was here in Bremerton when the war ended in 1945. This photo was taken on September 10, 1945.
USS Washington was eventually decommissioned and scrapped in the 1960s.

On May 13, 1984, USS Missouri (BB 63) left Bremerton, ending a three-decade stay in the reserve fleet at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.

A veteran of World War II, she joined Reserve Fleet in Bremerton in 1954, following the Korean War. She remained here until 1984, when she was recommissioned for service in the Persian Gulf. She returned to Bremerton in 1992-1998, then became a museum ship in Pearl Harbor. USS Missouri received a total of 11 battle stars for service in World War II, Korea, and the Persian Gulf.
