Today, we at the Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office honor and remember the brave men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice to secure the freedoms we all enjoy. Let us all pause today and pray for the family members left behind by the recently fallen. Let us thank God for their memory, for their willingness to serve, and for giving their lives for the cause of liberty. On this Memorial Day, let us remember…

“Today, the United States stands as a beacon of liberty and democratic strength before the community of nations. We are resolved to stand firm against those who would destroy the freedoms we cherish. We are determined to achieve an enduring peace -- a peace with liberty and with honor. This determination, this resolve, is the highest tribute we can pay to the many who have fallen in the service of our Nation… We owe this freedom of choice and action to those men and women in uniform who have served this nation and its interests in time of need. In particular, we are forever indebted to those who have given their lives that we might be free.” – President Ronald Reagan

“It doesn’t take a hero to order men into battle. It takes a hero to be one of those men who goes into battle." - General Norman Schwarzkopf

"Freedom makes a huge requirement of every human being. With freedom comes responsibility." – First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt

“If silence is ever golden, it must be here beside the graves of fifteen thousand men, whose lives were more significant than speech, and whose death was a poem, the music of which can never be sung." - President James A. Garfield

“The cost of freedom is always high, but Americans have always paid it. And one path we shall never choose, and that is the path of surrender, or submission." – President John F. Kennedy

“The United States and the freedom, for which it stands, the freedom for which they died, must endure and prosper. Their lives remind us that freedom is not bought cheaply. It has a cost; it imposes a burden. And just as they whom we commemorate were willing to sacrifice, so too must we -- in a less final, less heroic way -- be willing to give of ourselves.” – President Ronald Reagan

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” - Jesus Christ (John 15:13)

Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office Launches “Special Needs Occupant – Respond with Care” Sticker Program
Transylvania County, NC – Sheriff Chuck Owenby and the Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office are proud to announce the launch of a new community initiative, the “Special Needs Occupant – Respond with Care” sticker program. This program is designed to help first responders better identify and assist individuals with disabilities during emergency situations.
The program provides clearly visible stickers for both vehicles and residences, alerting law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical personnel that a person with special needs may be present. These identifiers can play a critical role in ensuring responders approach situations with increased awareness, patience, and appropriate care.
“This program is about enhancing safety, communication, and understanding,” said Sheriff Chuck Owenby. “By giving our first responders a simple visual indicator, we can better tailor our response to meet the needs of individuals who may have physical, developmental, cognitive, or other disabilities.”
The “Respond with Care” stickers are available to residents of Transylvania County at no cost. Community members who have a family member or occupant with special needs are encouraged to participate. The stickers can be placed on vehicle windows and at the entrance of a home to provide immediate notification to emergency personnel.
Sheriff Owenby emphasized that participation in the program is entirely voluntary and intended to provide an added layer of safety and reassurance for families and caregivers.
“This is a proactive step toward building a more inclusive and responsive community,” Owenby added. “We want all residents to feel safe and understood when interacting with emergency services.”
Residents interested in obtaining a sticker or learning more about the program can contact the Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office or visit our office during regular business hours. Stickers are available in two sizes: 3" x 3" and 4" x 4".
A special thank you to Dabbler Graphics, Rosman, NC for their assistance in the design and printing of the stickers.
