This past Friday, to wrap up police week, the Brewster Police Department recognized several employees for their contributions to the department and the community. Included in those recognitions, two officers received life saving awards and three others received meritorious service awards.
On May 20, 2025, a little before 9pm, officers were dispatched to a medical call for an unresponsive subject. Officer Andrew Dionne and Officer Joseph Thacher responded to the scene and located the victim, a 52 year old male, who was unresponsive on the kitchen floor with his teenage daughter performing CPR. Officer Dionne took over chest compressions while Officer Thacher prepared the AED. A shock was delivered through the AED and the subject began to recover. Brewster Rescue personnel arrived on scene and took over care. At the hospital, the individual recovered and was eventually able to return home to his family. Officer Dionne & Officer Thacher both received lifesaving awards for their swift actions providing high quality CPR and defibrillation.
On March 29, 2026, a little after 1 PM, Dispatch received a call from a female party who stated that a friend of hers, a 72-year-old male had called her to report that he had just shot himself. Officer Brandon Rice, Officer Colin Moran and Lieutenant Charles Mawn all responded to the scene. Upon arrival officers identified a male party laying on a couch with a firearm on the adjacent coffee table. The subject was conscious and able to follow officers instructions. Working together, officers were able to de-escalate and safely control the scene and provide medical care to the subject who had a single gunshot wound to the head. Brewster rescue personnel would eventually take over care and transport the subject to the hospital. He is currently receiving care at a mental health facility, but has recovered well from his injury. For their actions that day, all three officers received meritorious service awards. Also recognized with letters of commendation in this case were Officer Morgan Vermette and Dispatcher Schofield, whose calm and measured work in the dispatch center directed appropriate services to the scene.
