We want to be firemen. We want the opportunity to make the difference. Most of us want to do the job.

The safety culture puts an emphasis on safety of our crews over the citizens. It puts rescue operations, aggressive searches and attacks at the end of the scene priorities.

We’re showing up and moving with a purpose. We didn’t take the oath to sit in the yard and wait on two more to arrive before entering. We’re not here to ventilate the structure before searching the structure, at that point it’s recovery. The structure isn’t clear until we say it’s clear. It’s our job to put them first. Them before us. If you don’t agree, Walmart is hiring for better pay. They have to trust that you are doing everything in your power to make the situation better. You signed up to do this. Can they count on you?

We’re so damn focused on what’s next that we forget to appreciate what we just accomplished.

Celebrate the promotion. Celebrate the PR. Celebrate the new house. Celebrate the business. Celebrate getting your family to a better place. Celebrate the small victories nobody else knows you had to fight for.

And when your homies win? Celebrate that s**t too.
Their promotion isn’t your loss. Their success doesn’t make you less successful. Their progress doesn’t take anything away from yours.

Be the guy who genuinely wants to see his people win. Shake his hand. Buy the beer. Talk your s**t. Then get back to work.
