Terra Firma Hugel Terrace “Learning by Doing” Workshop
March 23, 8:30 – 12:00
The Church of the Holy Spirit
204 Monument Road, Orleans
Facilitated by Peter Jensen and Lynn Van Norman
Terra Firma Permagardens
A hugel terrace is a deep, organic matter rich, water capture and purification
technique particularly useful when mitigating erosive road runoff. Once created,
this provides a space for a new native, pollinator-friendly, meadow which will be
planted in early summer once subsoil moisture has been fully recharged. This is a
free workshop, hosted by the Church of the Holy Spirit and co-sponsored by
Orleans Conservation Trust and Terra Firma Permagardens. Attendance is
unlimited and working is NOT required…but you will learn better if you do!
Bring gloves and suitable work attire. This will involve light digging and movement
of material on level ground by 5-gallon bucket and wheel barrow.
Pre-Registration is Appreciated.

Town survey says, “Leave Drummer Boy alone - again!”

In the Drummer Boy Park Advisory Committee meeting held February 20, the results of the Drummer Boy citizens’ survey were reviewed and discussed by the committee and several citizens. Quoting Sharon Tennstedt who presented the survey findings, “Brewster respondents have 3 predominant sentiments on the park: Leave it as it is, keep the park as natural as possible, and (they) would not prioritize (DBP) over many other projects the town needs to fund.” Note the full survey results and meeting recording can be found on the committee website on the Brewster web page, and on this link:

A link is also attached on the committee website of the preliminary cost estimates for the project that the committee reviewed in an earlier meeting this February.

Further, there was a robust discussion about natural and low-cost rain gardens as a practical option that seemed to have strong support and had been included as part of the larger town proposals.

This survey confirms once again what Brewster voters had said very clearly on two previous occasions in the past eighteen months. I hope the intensive development proposals can finally be put to rest.

This page was created to provide you with an update on the Drummer Boy Park Plan that was discussed at the recent special town meeting last year. As you may recall, we voted to rework the plan through a new committee which included Charlie Summner, with the understanding that no boardwalk would be included.

Now, here's the catch: while technically they are following the voted decision, it seems like they are pushing forward with the same plan, just without the boardwalk. They are claiming that this revised version is what the majority of voters wanted. 🤔

On one hand, it's a victory that they listened to our concerns and removed the boardwalk from the plan. However, we also want to preserve the natural beauty of our park and avoid burdening the taxpayers with an additional $3 million expense—which would include paving a large portion of the park. Therefore, we need to remain cautious and question their true intentions.

Is this revised plan truly what the voters want, or are they simply finding a way to push their own agenda while appearing to be in line with our vote? We must ensure that our voices are heard and that the decisions made genuinely reflect the desires of the community.

Let's stay informed, attend the upcoming May town meeting, and actively participate in discussions surrounding the Drummer Boy Park Plan. Our engagement is crucial in holding our elected officials accountable and ensuring that they act in the best interest of the community, of the environment, and of the history of the place.

We have a responsibility to protect our park and ensure that taxpayer funds are used wisely. Together, let's continue to advocate for transparency, fairness, and the preservation of our beloved Drummer Boy Park.

I hear that rain gardens and roadside trenches can alleviate most rain water at almost zero cost and in an environmentally friendly manner.

Any rain garden experts, experienced road construction workers, or anyone else know if these ideas might work at Drummer Boy?

The powers-that-be are pushing forward with a $3 million plan to pave Drummer Boy Park. We can’t let that happen. A community effort to build a better playground, perhaps in a new location, with the addition of a few rain gardens and maybe a dry well is all that is needed to improve upon the area while maintaining its naturally beautiful and historically significant appeal.

The town is putting out a survey soon, that will no doubt be misleading. Please pay careful attention. We cannot afford another $3 million expense.
