*E-Bike Safety & Alabama Law Reminder*

As electric bicycles (e-bikes) continue to grow in popularity, the Brewton Police Department would like to remind riders and parents of several important Alabama laws regarding their operation.

In Alabama, e-bikes are generally considered the same as traditional bicycles. Riders have the same rights and responsibilities as bicyclists and are required to obey all traffic laws.

No driver’s license, registration, tag, title, or insurance is required for a legally classified electric bicycle.

E-bikes may be operated anywhere traditional bicycles are permitted, including streets, roadways, highways, shoulders, bicycle lanes, and multi-use paths, unless otherwise restricted by local authorities.

Alabama law classifies e-bikes as:
• Class 1: Pedal-assist only, up to 20 mph.
• Class 2: Throttle-assisted, up to 20 mph.
• Class 3: Pedal-assist only, up to 28 mph.

Class 3 E-Bikes Have Additional Requirements:
• Riders must be 16 years of age or older to operate a Class 3 e-bike.
• All operators and passengers on a Class 3 e-bike must wear a properly fitted bicycle helmet.
• Class 3 e-bikes must be equipped with a speedometer.

Riders and parents/guardians should also be aware that some electric-powered two-wheel vehicles marketed as “e-bikes” may exceed Alabama’s legal e-bike classifications. Vehicles with excessive power or speed capabilities may be subject to different laws and requirements.

To help promote safety and educate riders, Brewton Police Department officers will be utilizing our very own e-bikes throughout the city. Officers will be available to answer questions, provide safety information, and help ensure that e-bikes are operated safely and legally. When necessary, officers will also enforce applicable laws and regulations regarding e-bike operations.

The Brewton Police Department encourages all riders to wear a helmet, remain alert, obey all traffic laws, and ride responsibly. Safe riding helps protect both the rider and everyone sharing our roadways.

Congratulations to Sgt. Mitchell Crutchfield on successfully completing the Traffic Homicide Investigation training course in Selma, Alabama.

This intensive two-week course was held May 4 through May 14 and provided advanced training in traffic homicide investigations, crash reconstruction principles, and investigative techniques.

We are proud of Sgt. Crutchfield’s continued dedication to professional development and commitment to serving our community.

At the city council meeting on Tuesday, Officer Madelyn Smith was officially sworn in by Chief Matthew Jordan.

Investigators with the Brewton Police Department have charged Devon Shavers, of Atmore, with three counts of attempted murder and two counts of shooting into an occupied dwelling in relation to separate shootings that occurred in Brewton on December 13 and 16, 2024. These shootings are connected to the murder of Rickel Samuel, which occurred in February 2025. The investigation of Rickel Samuel's murder is ongoing and may result in more arrests.

This award was presented “for distinction among your peers in certification compliance and engagement in professional development.”

Our dispatchers work tirelessly behind the scenes each day to serve our first responders and community with professionalism, dedication, and excellence. Their commitment to training, certification, and continuous improvement plays a vital role in the safety of our citizens and first responders.

We are extremely proud of our Communications Division for earning this prestigious recognition and thankful for the hard work they put in every single day. Congratulations to our entire team on this outstanding achievement!

The Brewton Police Department would like to extend a huge thank you to Riff Raff Mobile Restaurant for their incredible generosity and support!

During the annual softball tournament, Riff Raff donated 100% of their proceeds, raising over $2,400 for the department’s Shop With A Cop initiative. Their willingness to give back to our community and help make a difference for local children is truly appreciated!

We are grateful for community partners like The Riff Raff Mobile Restaurant who continue to support the Brewton Police Department and help make this program possible.
