On June 29, 2026, Escambia County Deputies responded to a residence on Atmosphere Road in reference to a shots fired disturbance. After arriving on scene, it was determined that a suspect had discharged a firearm and continued to make threats of violence towards neighbors and law enforcement. The suspect had barricaded himself inside his residence with a firearm and refused to surrender to law enforcement. The Escambia County SWAT Team was activated along with negotiators. During negotiations, the suspect refused to come out and continued to make threats. After negotiations failed, an armored vehicle was utilized to approach the front of the house to make contact at the front door. The suspect exited the rear with a shotgun. The suspect was ordered to surrender and the use of less lethal equipment was unsuccessful. The suspect raised his firearm and pointed it at law enforcement causing the suspect to be fatally injured by gunfire. Life saving measures were attempted with no success.

As in any officer involved shooting, The State Bureau of Investigation was contacted and the investigation was turned over to them for a thorough investigation and review. Any media requests should be directed to SBI.

We are looking for any information the public might have from an incident that happened tonight around 5:15pm at McGowan Bridge on Highway 29. We are attempting to locate occupants of a vehicle who fired numerous gunshots off the bridge into the water. One of the rounds struck a man in the head who was on the sandbar. If you know anything or happen to be the individual who fired the gun, please call or come by the Escambia County Sheriff’s. The individual who was struck by the round survived the incident and is expected to have a full recovery. Call us with any tips! 251-809-0741

There are scam calls being made claiming to be from the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office threatening to send people’s family members to rehab and also claiming they need to pay bail money over the phone. The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office doesn’t call people or request money over the phone. Please don’t send money over the phone or go buy gift cards and mail to anyone. It is a scam. If you feel something isn’t right, call our office and ask for assistance.
