HURRICANE WEEK - Myrtle Beach hurricane history. Since 1850, a total of 79 tropical storms and hurricanes have passed within 50 miles of Myrtle Beach. That roughly equates to a tropical storm every 2 years and a hurricane every 6 years. Based on historical records, Horry County should see a MAJOR HURRICANE (category 3 or 4) make landfall every 30 to 35 years. The last one to do so was Hazel in 1954. (No, Hugo does not count since it made landfall 100 miles south)
