Now that August has arrived, many college students are preparing to head off to dorm rooms. Here are some tips on how to help keep your student safe while they are away from home. We wish all the students heading off to higher education facilities a safe and healthy school year!

An EXTREMELY important message from one of our mutual aid partners! In the case of an emergency, whether by fire truck or ambulance, most apparatus require extra room to pass parked cars. Please be aware of your parking situation. When there is an emergency, every second counts!

We are happy to share that our own Brick Township EMS Chief Michael Botts is officially cancer free! Please keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers as he continues on his road to recovery!

Today we hosted our Fire Camp Graduation at Pioneer Hose Fire Company. Cadets were given a sneak preview of their video before parents and family arrived. Once everyone arrived, opening comments were given by Bureau Chief Kevin Batzel. Also in attendance and addressing the cadets and their families were Mayor Lisa Crate and Joint Board of Fire Commissioners President Jim Riccio. Herbertsville Fire Company Chief Jim Lepore and members of the Herbertsville Fire Company were also in attendance to support the Cadets. The ceremony was led by Assistant Fire Marshal Aubrey Borden, who successfully oversaw the program for her first time this year. Later today, the video will be available here on our page. As we sort through other photos, we will create an album to our page in the near future.

THANK YOU to our wonderful Cadets who, despite the heat, showed up every day ready to work!

Day 4 - FIRE CAMP HAS CONCLUDED!
Today we closed out our final day of activities for Cadets. Their day started with a quick warm up and moved onto flaking a hose, charged line advancement into the burn building with proper extinguishing technique, full fireman gear walks and learning how to properly dress a hydrant. Then it was back on the bus to visit our friends over at the New Jersey State Police center for Task Force One.

Once there, they met with USAR Member and Chief from Herbertsville Fire Company, Jim Lepore, who gave them a run down of what their morning was going to be. Cadets quickly moved onto hands on stations to mimic rescue operations with numerous members of the USAR team. Stations included establishing a pulley system to help move heavy weight like a vehicle or lift a person out of a low lying area, rescue lifting airbags and cribbing which helps lift and hold heavy weight in a rescue scenario such as a trapped victim in a building collapse or car accident, using special search cameras to assist in viewing inside a collapsed area and setting up a perimeter to use special equipment that picks up vibrations if someone is trapped and yelling for help to assist in locating them. No search and rescue team is complete without a canine! Today, Cadets met Critter, the USAR K9, who gave them a demonstration of how he locates rescue patients. After lunch, it was time for a little competition! Cadets held a relay to see which team could rescue a ‘victim’ and carry them back! While at the USAR facility, Cadets were also able to view the 9/11 Memorial with actual beams that were recovered from the wreckage.

Following another HOT, hardworking day of Fire Camp, Cadets were surprised by Chief Jim Lepore with a visit from Peaches & Ice Cream! We would like to extend a HUGE thank you to Chief Lepore for his support of the Fire Camp program! Tomorrow we will conclude our program with a small graduation ceremony for our Cadets and their families.

We cannot conclude our week without a special THANK YOU to our awesome EMTs, Gina and Emily, who were with us!

Day 3 is a wrap for our 5th year of Fire Camp!
EMS day is always a fun day when we get to spend it with the most elite EMS team around!
The morning got started with a quick warm up including another round of hose drags and a climb of the burn building in addition to carrying heavier fireman equipment like an ax, Halligan bar and a full water can then walking a lap with full firefighter gear. Cadets quickly moved on to view emergency apparatus, gear and equipment used in emergency scenarios. They started their hands on activities with proper tourniquet application. One of the highlights of the morning was a K9 demonstration provided by EMS Supervisor Anthony Botts and Brick EMS Rescue K9, Pepper! Before lunch, Cadets were taught how to handle a situation where a patient isn’t breathing, to performing basic CPR procedures (both for adults/children and infants under the age of one), proper Heimlich maneuver for choking victims of all ages, as well as properly using an AED machine. The cadets needed a quick refresh with some spray from a hose by Assistant Fire Marshal Aubrey Borden before breaking for lunch! Following lunch, Cadets learned how to create a sling to immobilize a wounded limb, different ways to move patients (including emergency situations where utilizing a stretcher isn’t possible) and how to evaluate a patient while in Triage. Cadets used their newly taught skills and participated in a Triage exercise where each team battled to evaluate the most amount of patients CORRECTLY the quickest. We are looking forward to another day of activities with the Cadets tomorrow!
