Norristown has always been a place of immigration and emigration.

The town is named for Isaac Norris, a member of the colonial Pennsylvania legislature who ordered the casting of the Liberty Bell. With the introduction of Europeans to North America, the Swedish and Dutch fur traders traveled the Schuylkill during their trading missions. During the British colonial period came the English, followed by the Germans who established a small settlement. During the Ame

rican Revolution, Norristown saw hostilities during the British occupation of Philadelphia when the town and its iron works were burned to the ground. During the Abolitionist Movement Norristown was also an important stop on the Underground Railroad. Norristown was one of the largest communities under Pennsylvania's borough form of government. Norristown was established as a mill town. It was a retail center for the rural areas outside of Philadelphia.

Municipal offices are closed Sept. 7 for the Labor Day holiday.
There will be no trash collection or street cleaning. Trash collection and street cleaning resume Sept. 8.

On Sept. 1 a procession will es**rt the transfer of Montgomery County's 9/11 Memorial from Eagleville to its new permanent home at Elmwood Park.

The memorial incorporates a steel I-beam recovered from the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

The procession starts at 9 a.m. with intermittent road closures to begin at 8:30 a.m. along Eagleville Road, Ridge Pike, Main Street, Markley Street (Route 202), and Harding Boulevard

A public rededication ceremony will take place Sept. 11 at 10 a.m. at Elmwood Park.

El 1 de septiembre, una procesión escoltará el traslado del Monumento Conmemorativo del 11 de Septiembre del Condado de Montgomery desde Eagleville hasta su nuevo hogar permanente en Elmwood Park. El monumento incorpora una viga de acero recuperada de la Torre Norte del World Trade Center.

The Hometown Heroes program has SOLD OUT! No new applications will be accepted for banners to hang in 2026-27. Our streets look great with these beautiful banners up to honor the service members who call(ed) Norristown home. Thanks to our residents, families and friends who helped honor loved ones by participating in the first-year implementation of the program. Banners that are currently up will hang again next year. Applications will be available for the 2028-29 program years.

NOTE: We still have over 25 banners to hang before we close out the year.

El programa Hometown Heroes (Héroes de la Ciudad Natal) se ha AGOTADO! No se aceptarán nuevas solicitudes para los estandartes que se colocarán durante 2026-27. Nuestras calles lucen increíbles con estos hermosos estandartes que honran a los miembros de las fuerzas armadas que viven o vivieron en Norristown. Gracias a nuestros residentes, familias y amigos que ayudaron a honrar a sus seres queridos al participar en la implementación del programa durante su primer año. Los estandartes que están colocados actualmente permanecerán colocados nuevamente el próximo año. Las solicitudes estarán disponibles para los años del programa 2028-29.

The next movie in the Summer Movie Series will be out of this world! “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” takes Mario and Luigi to outer space to save the Princess Rosalina. You can comfortably watch the film on tierra firma tomorrow night at 8:15 in Elmwood Park.

La próxima película de la Serie de Cine de Verano estará fuera de este mundo! “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” lleva a Mario y Luigi al espacio exterior para salvar a la Princesa Rosalina. Did you know…

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has provided over 3,500 books to Montgomery County children? Parton’s program provides free books to children from birth to age 5. The program is administered through the Literacy Council of Norristown and reaches children in Norristown and Pottstown. Literacy is the gift that keeps on giving, and Ms. Parton’s Imagination Library is her enduring legacy to the Norristown community.

Tomorrow, Norristown firefighters, Councilwoman Natalie Colson and Judge Hakim Jones will be going door-to-door on North Hills Drive as part of NFD’s Smoke Detector Canvas. They will be checking smoke detectors, providing important fire safety information, and helping residents make sure their homes are protected.
We look forward to seeing our neighbors tomorrow evening at 6 o’clock!
