Update:
06/03/2026 at 846 PM BPD officers have now cleared the prison. All prisoners (and staff) accounted for and secure at other TDCJ facilities.
Thank you for remaining clear of the location as we mitigated this incident.
As I stated many times today, I’m very proud of the local response to this critical incident! Each responder was more than willing to accomplish our goal - a safe and effective evacuation. We value our partnership with local and State First Responders!

PIO UPDATE:
CO levels inside the facility have decreased to a near safe level. Out of an abundance of caution, entry has been delayed until levels drop below 9 for safe re-entry.
Atmos Energy is currently on scene and standing by, awaiting safe conditions before entering the facility to begin further assessment and mitigation.
All agencies remain on scene and continue to monitor conditions. All staff and inmates remain accounted for.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
At approximately 9:02 a.m., the Bridgeport Emergency Services were dispatched to the Bridgeport Correction Center following reports of a carbon monoxide (CO) leak measuring 500-600 parts per million. Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed the leak was originating from the facility’s boiler room.
As a precautionary measure, all inmates were evacuated from the affected area. A unified command was established involving the Bridgeport Fire Department, Bridgeport Police Department, multiple assisting law enforcement agencies, Wise County EMS, correctional facility officials, and Atmos Energy.
Atmos Energy personnel arrived on scene and safely shut off all natural gas service to the facility to assist in mitigating the incident.
At this time, all staff and inmates have been accounted for and are safe. Inmates have been relocated to a secure location in accordance with the facility’s emergency response procedures.
This is an active and ongoing incident. There is no threat to the public, and the incident remains under control as emergency personnel continue to monitor the situation and ensure the safety of everyone involved.
