The Center for Animal Research and Education (CARE) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the loving and long-term care of over 60 animals including mountain lions, tigers, leopards, bobcats, ring-tail lemurs, serval, lynx, lions, llamas, and a tortoise. Some of the animals were abused, abandoned, or kept as exotic pets before they came to the facility. Others were retired from the e

ntertainment industry, retired from zoos, or transferred from other facilities that closed or reached capacity. Regardless of an animal’s origins, they are all given tremendous love and world class husbandry when they find a home here. We continue to evolve in order to best serve our mission of providing a safe, permanent, and loving home to exotic animals in need. We focus on excellence in physical and emotional care, advocating animal welfare through education, and conducting minimally-invasive research with the aims of improving living conditions for captive animal populations world-wide.

Today we’re celebrating National Cougar Day! 🐾

Cougars are more than just pretty faces. In the wild, they are a keystone species, helping keep prey populations in balance. That leads to healthier vegetation supporting even more wildlife. Pretty impressive for cats that spend most of their day looking adorable!

Want to celebrate National Cougar Day with us? Consider an honorary adoption or sponsorship of Ruby, our own adorable little pocket puma! ❤️

Honorary adoptions and sponsorships directly support Ruby’s care, helping provide the habitat, enrichment, food, and veterinary care she needs to live a happy, healthy life. It’s a meaningful way to make a difference and form a special connection with one of CARE’s cutest residents.

Join us in celebrating Ruby and the important role cougars play in the wild!

Today we’re celebrating ! 🐾

Lynx play an important role in ecosystems around the world, and there are four distinct species. Think you know them all? The fourth one might surprise you!

🧡 The rarest: Iberian Lynx (Spain & Portugal)
❄️ The fluffiest: Canada Lynx (North America)
👑 The largest: Eurasian Lynx (Europe & Asia), like our beautiful Malika (pictured!)
🐾 The smallest: Bobcats (North America)

That’s right... bobcats are actually members of the lynx family!

So today we’re celebrating our very own Malika, Trooper, Max, Mia, Bob, and Bobbie. ❤️

is here! 🎉

And our very first challenge is: Guess Godzilla’s Weight! 🐢

You’ve seen him roaming around CARE. He’s our very own resident dinosaur! In tortoise years, he’s still a pretty young guy at just 38 years old. Sulcata tortoises can live anywhere from 70 to 100+ years, so Godzilla still has plenty of adventures ahead of him.

But the real question is...

How much do you think he weighs?

Drop your guesses in the comments below (no cheating! 👀). We’ll reveal the answer in our Stories later today!

Our second birthday celebration is a set…Araali and Zuberi are 12 today and what better way to celebrate them than posting a video of them as awkward teenagers. Happy bday boys! Thank goodness your manes grew in!! 🦁🦁

We have a few birthdays to celebrate today, and first up is a really big one! Happy 21st bday to our sweet and always adorable Fire bug (and her signature blep). We love you Buggy!! 💕

It is Juno’s 5th birthday and she had herself a little party! She is super picky about enrichment, but turns out she LOVED the dill w**d we gave her. She also killed a snake in her enclosure, but we aren’t gonna show that part. All in all, her bday party was a pretty big dill! 🤣

Sweet brothers! 💕

Right before Zuberi conked out from sedation for his claw trim, he and Araali started calling to one another.

Araali was VERY concerned about what was happening to his brother and why he couldn’t get to him.

These boys argue with each other ALL THE TIME! They get jealous of one another and don’t like to share things. But, they are deeply, profoundly attached to one another. They can mess with each other, but no one else can mess with their sibling - or dare to keep them apart!

It was a stressful but very successful day yesterday at CARE! ❤️🐾

A huge thank you to Dr. Bill McGee and our amazing CAREgiver team for helping several of our senior residents with some much-needed “spa treatments.”

As big cats age, arthritis and decreased activity can make it difficult for them to naturally wear down and maintain their claws. Without regular care, claws can curl into the toe pads and become painful.

Today, 20-year-old Jakey and Luca received mani-pedis, and our oldest tiger, sweet Allie (second photo), enjoyed a spa day too! At 24 years old, she continues to amaze us every day. 🐅💕

Zuberi also got some attention for a troublesome dewclaw (third photo).

We’re happy to report everyone is recovering beautifully and already feeling much more comfortable. A long day, a stressful day, but a very good day for the animals.

Animals First—Always. ❤️

They are a noisy bunch! Caught a moment sharing some “moans” and “wails” with Momo and the gang. Lemurs are incredibly social creatures and make all kinds of sounds to communicate different things to the group. These vocalizations are believed to promote group cohesion when they are excited. Of course Mort was unbothered and far more interested in seeing if there were treats being offered! 🗣️
