City of Bridgeport Social Media Use Policy

Purpose:
This policy establishes guidelines for the establishment and use by the City of Bridgeport of social media sites (including but not limited to Facebook and Twitter) as a means of conveying City of Bridgeport (“City”) information to its citizens. The intended purpose behind establishing City of Bridgeport social media sites is to disseminate information from the City, about the City, to its citizens. The City of Bridgeport has an overriding interest and expectation in deciding what is “spoken” on behalf of the City on City social media sites. For purposes of this policy, “social media” is understood to be content created by individuals, using accessible, expandable, and upgradable publishing technologies, through and on the Internet. Examples of social media include, but are not limited to: Facebook, blogs, RSS, YouTube, Twitter, and Instagram. For purposes of this policy, “comments” include information, articles, pictures, videos or any other form of communicative content posted on a City of Bridgeport social media site. The establishment and use by any City department of City social media sites are subject to approval by the City Manager or his/her designees. City of Bridgeport social media sites shall be administered by the PIO.
2. City social media sites should make clear that they are maintained by the City of Bridgeport staff and that they follow the City’s Social Media Policy.
3. Wherever possible, City social media sites should link back to the official City of Bridgeport website for forms, documents, services and other information necessary to conduct business with the City of Bridgeport.
4. The PIO will monitor content on City social media sites to ensure adherence to both the City’s Social Media Policy and the interest and goals of the City of Bridgeport.
5. The City reserves the right to restrict or remove any content that is deemed in violation of this Social Media Policy or any applicable law. Any content removed based on these guidelines must be retained by the Public Information Officer for a reasonable period of time, including the time, date and identity of the poster, when available.
6. The City of Bridgeport’s website at www.bridgeportwv.com will remain the City’s primary and predominant internet presence.
7. All City social media sites shall adhere to applicable federal, state and local laws, regulations and policies.
8. City social media sites are subject to the West Virginia Freedom of Information Act. Any content maintained in a social media format that is related to City business, including a list of subscribers, posted communication, and communication submitted for posting, may be a public record subject to public disclosure.
9. Comments on topics or issues not within the jurisdictional bounds of the City of Bridgeport may be removed.
10. Employees representing the City via City social media sites must conduct themselves at all times as a representative of the City and in accordance with all City policies.
11. Departmental Staff will be responsible for the content and upkeep of any social media sites that their department may create.
12. This Social Media Policy may be revised at any time with approval from the City Manager. Comment Policy:
1. As a public entity the City must abide by certain standards to serve all its constituents in a civil and unbiased manner.
2. The intended purpose behind establishing City of Bridgeport social media sites is to disseminate information from the City, about the City, to its citizens.
3. Comments containing, but not limited to, any of the following inappropriate forms of content shall not be permitted on City of Bridgeport social media sites and are subject to removal and/or restriction by the Public Information Officer at the request of the City Manager:
1. Comments not related to the original topic, including random or unintelligible comments;
2. Profane, obscene, violent, or pornographic content and/or language;
3. Content that promotes, fosters or perpetuates discrimination on the basis of race, creed, color, age, religion, gender, or national origin;
4. Defamatory or personal attacks;
5. Threats to any person or organization;
6. Comments in support of, or in opposition to, any political campaigns or ballot measures;
7. Solicitation of commerce, including but not limited to advertising of any business or product for sale;
8. Conduct in violation of any federal, state or local law;
9. Encouragement of illegal activity;
10. Information that may tend to compromise the safety or security of the public or public systems; or
11. Content that violates a legal ownership interest, such as a copyright, of any party.
4. A comment posted by a member of the public on any City of Bridgeport social media site is the opinion of the commentator or poster only, and publication of a comment does not imply endorsement of, or agreement by, the City of Bridgeport, nor do such comments necessarily reflect the opinions or policies of the City of Bridgeport. (This disclaimer will be displayed on all social media sites.)
5. The City of Bridgeport reserves the right to deny access to City of Bridgeport social media sites for any individual, who violates the City of Bridgeport’s Social Media Policy, at any time and without prior notice.
6. Departments shall monitor their social media sites for comments requesting responses from the City and for comments in violation of this policy.
7. When a City of Bridgeport employee responds to a comment, in his/her capacity as a City of Bridgeport employee, the employee’s name and title should be made available when necessary, and the employee shall not share personal information about himself or herself, or other City employees.

Today, we celebrate the hardworking men and women whose dedication, talent, and commitment help keep our community—and our country—moving forward.

City of Bridgeport offices will be closed today, September 7th, 2026, in observance of Labor Day. We will reopen Tuesday, September 8th at 7:30am.

From our City employees and local businesses to educators, healthcare workers, first responders, tradespeople, and everyone who works each day to make a difference, thank you for all that you do!

Job Summary:
Performs field inspections for compliance to the city ordinances, zoning ordinances, property maintenance, and contractor registration codes. This position consists primarily of fieldwork requiring the employee to enter private property or dwellings, including climbing stairs, for the purpose of routine inspections and to investigate suspected City code violations. On-site conditions will vary from property to property and may include identifying health/safety hazards. Meets with contractors and public to discuss matters pertaining to building, zoning, and property maintenance codes. Must interface daily with other agencies, businesses, community members, thus must be able to represent the City’s position accurately, timely and in an articulate and professional manner. Must be professional in appearance, behavior, and attitude. Fieldwork will be performed year-round and can involve contact with inclement weather and steep topography. The office work environment includes seated at a desk using a computer, answering phone calls, and answering questions in person at the service counter. This position will perform other duties and responsibilities as apparent or as delegated.

Required Qualifications:
• High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
• Possess a valid West Virginia driver’s license.
• Good written and verbal communication skills and ability to effectively interact with the public and coworkers in a courteous and tactful manner.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office Applications.
• Possess or acquire within two years certain International Code Council (ICC) certifications.

The 2026 Fall Foliage Forecast is out, and soon our Mountain State will be showing off some of its most beautiful colors!

According to the forecast, fall colors will begin appearing in parts of West Virginia as early as the end of September, with peak color progressing across the state throughout October and into early November.
