You may see Patrick out and about in Bridgeport over the next few days! He has received a Peddler’s Permit from the City Office and will be selling books through August 24th.

If you see him going door-to-door, please know that he has completed the appropriate permit process with the City.

As the new school year has started, our mornings and afternoons have gotten a little bit busier with buses, parents dropping off and picking up and students making their way to and from school.

Whether you're driving, walking or riding the bus, everyone has a part in making sure our kids get where they're going safely.

🛑 DRIVERS - REMEMBER: STOP MEANS STOP.

When a school bus is stopped with its yellow or red lights flashing and stop arm extended, motorists are required to STOP as provided by Nebraska law. Do not attempt to pass the bus, and remain stopped until the stop signal is retracted and the flashing yellow or red lights are turned off.

Failure to stop for a school bus may result in a fine of up to $500.

📖 Nebraska Revised Statute § 60-6,175

🟡 Drivers also remember - slow down, put the distractions away and expect children near roadways, crosswalks and bus stops.

🟠 Students - stay alert, use sidewalks and crosswalks, follow your bus driver's and crossing guard's instructions and always make sure drivers see you before crossing a roadway.

🟣 Parents - take a few minutes to review safe walking, crossing and bus habits with your children as they settle into their school year routines.

A few extra seconds of patience can help make sure every child gets to school and back home safely.

It only takes one forgotten campfire to change everything. Thankfully, nothing happened this time.

While patrolling the lake last night, one of our deputies came across a campfire that was unattended.

Campfires are a great part of spending time outdoors, but they should never be left unattended. Weather conditions can change without warning, and even smoldering embers have the potential to ignite nearby vegetation.

Before you leave your campsite, take the time to make sure your fire is completely out by drowning it with water — not just covered with dirt or left to burn down.

A few extra minutes to properly extinguish your campfire can help us protect our community and the areas we all enjoy.

Motorcycle Fatality Investigation – Highway 92

On July 31st, 2026, at approximately 8:41 p.m., deputies with the Morrill County Sheriff's Office responded to a reported injury motorcycle crash on Highway 92 near mile marker 43, just west of the South Bayard Junction.

Deputies, along with the Bayard Volunteer Fire Department, arrived on scene and began providing life-saving measures to the operator of the motorcycle. Despite their efforts, Daniel F. Waechter, a resident of Bayard, Nebraska, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The preliminary investigation determined that Daniel F. Waechter was traveling eastbound on Highway 92 when he struck a deer that had entered the roadway. The collision caused him to lose control of the motorcycle, resulting in the crash.

The Morrill County Sheriff's Office extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Daniel F. Waechter during this difficult time and asks that the community keep them in their thoughts.

The Morrill County Sheriff's Office would like to thank the Bayard Volunteer Fire Department and the Nebraska State Patrol for their assistance.

This incident remains under investigation by the Morrill County Sheriff's Office.
