I am please to share Governor Ned Lamont’s announcement that Bridgeport was included in state grants to support the purchase and protection of more than 1,243 acres of open space and to support the improvement of urban green and community garden spaces. Bridgeport received $31,000 for East Side Community Garden Refresh through Groundwork Bridgeport to rejuvenate four active community garden sites and one green space that serves as an outdoor classroom, all located within the East Side neighborhood. All sites are well stewarded and represent important neighborhood assets, but require repairs and improvements to increase accessibility, usability, and overall functionality. Proposed improvements include the repair, replacement, or installation of new garden sheds, repairs to existing garden beds, installation of additional garden beds, landscaping trails and community gathering places, pollinator gardens, habitat zones with pollinator-friendly plantings, composting systems, irrigation, gardening, and stewardship supplies.

New legislation prohibiting the sale and importation of handguns that can easily be converted into fully automatic machine guns has been signed into law.

This addresses a recent nationwide increase in which fi****ms have been designed in a way that enables them to become automatic weapons with the use of a simple conversion device that’s about the size of a Lego.

This heartbreaking incident is another reminder of a growing problem on our roads. A Bridgeport construction worker is now facing life-altering injuries because of a hit-and-run that never should have happened.

Leaving the scene of a crash is a serious crime. Ignoring work zone safety puts the people who build and maintain our communities directly in harm's way.

I will continue working with labor leaders and local officials to strengthen work zone protections and hold dangerous drivers accountable.

I was proud to help secure an additional $2 million in state funding to continue the environmental cleanup and preservation of the historic Re*****on Arms site, bringing us one step closer to transforming this long-vacant property into a catalyst for economic growth on Bridgeport’s East Side.

This project is personal to me. I was born and raised on the East Side and have seen firsthand both the challenges and the potential of this property.

As the redevelopment process moves forward, I share the sentiments expressed by Councilwomen Aidee Nieves and Maria Valle: the community must have a meaningful seat at the table. The future of this site should reflect the voices, needs, and aspirations of the residents who live here and will be impacted by its redevelopment.

We have a unique opportunity to honor the site's history while creating jobs, investment, and long-term benefits for the East Side and the City of Bridgeport.

Mayor Joe Ganim's administration expects to forward a redevelopment proposal or proposals to the City Council in July.

Over the weekend, the Juneteenth of Fairfield Co Parade and Festival held its annual flag-raising ceremony at the Margaret E. Morton Government Center. I was honored to attend not only as State Representative, but also as the 2026 Grand Marshal of the Puerto Rican Parade of Fairfield County Inc. - PRPFC.

Thank you to Deb Caviness and the entire board for the invitation and for continuing this important tradition, which has grown tremendously over the years and continues to make a positive impact on our community.

As our nation approaches its 250th anniversary, we recognize the invaluable contributions, sacrifices, and achievements of African Americans throughout our history. The Juneteenth flag stands as a symbol of freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of justice.

I look forward to joining the community once again at the Juneteenth Parade next weekend.
