Women’s Equality Day is observed each August 26th to commemorate the 1920 certification of the 19th Amendment, which prohibited denying the right to vote on the basis of s*x.

That milestone did not mean all women could immediately exercise that right. Black women, particularly in the South, continued to face poll taxes, literacy tests, intimidation, violence and other Jim Crow barriers that suppressed their votes for decades. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 became a critical federal protection against many of those practices.

More than a century later, women’s equality also speaks to equal access to education, economic opportunity, fair pay, leadership, representation and full participation in civic life.

August 26 is both a recognition of the progress women have made and a reminder of the work that remains.

Investing in early childhood education sets up students for a lifetime of success in learning. Teachers tell me all the time they can tell when a child has had access to quality pre-k, and the work my administration has done will ensure zip codes will never be a factor in defining the quality of education our children receive.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Early Head Start Research and Evaluation Project, children who participated in Early Head Start showed stronger cognitive, language, and social emotional development by age 3. Head Start research also found that vocabulary and classroom communication skills predicted stronger reading and math performance in kindergarten, while a RAND study linked academic and nonacademic readiness at kindergarten entry to achievement through fifth grade. The research is clear. The foundation for later school success is being built well before kindergarten.
