June is Gun Safety & Violence Awareness Month in Cumberland County.

Gun violence is not just a national issue. It affects families, schools, neighborhoods, and communities across the country.

According to CDC data, 44,447 people died from gun-related injuries in the United States in 2024. That is an average of about 122 lives lost each day.

The data also shows that firearm-related deaths include both homicides and suicides, which is why prevention, awareness, safe storage, and access to support resources all matter.

During Gun Safety & Violence Awareness Month, Cumberland County will continue sharing information and resources to support safer homes, schools, and communities.

Awareness is one part of prevention. So are safe storage, youth engagement, trusted conversations, and community partnership.

Did you know?

About one-third of children in the U.S. live in homes with fi****ms, and an estimated 4.6 million children live in homes where a firearm is stored loaded and unlocked.

Children are naturally curious. That is why safe storage matters.

During Gun Safety & Violence Awareness Month, families are encouraged to take simple prevention steps that can help reduce risk at home and in the community.

✅ Store fi****ms locked and unloaded.
✅ Store ammunition separately.
✅ Keep keys and combinations out of reach of children and teens.
✅ Talk with children about what to do if they ever find a gun: stop, do not touch it, leave the area, and tell an adult.
✅ Contact your local police department to request a free gun lock or gun safety kit, if available.

Gun safety starts with prevention, and prevention starts at home.

On Friday evening, Prosecutor Webb-McRae and staff (Victim Witness, Community Justice and Detective) attended a "Gun Violence Awareness Day" event hosted by the Masons Ionic Lodge 40 and Life Worth Living.

We stood in solidarity with Victim Survivors, Community Leaders and Credible Messengers and discussed what we could do to end gun violence. The discussion turned to increasing mental health supports, addressing community trauma, seeking justice for harm and moving forward with collective purpose.

Present in the small gathering were county and municipal leaders, non-profit leaders, judges and school board members. Imagine what we can do to combat Community Violence when we all move forward with vision and purpose.
