Sheriff’s Office Mourns Sudden Loss of Deputy

It is with deep respect and sorrow that we announce the passing of Craven County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Margie “Nikki” Koonce of New Bern who died on May 15, 2026, at her home.

Sergeant Koonce dedicated her life to public service, faithfully protecting and serving her community throughout her distinguished career in law enforcement. Sergeant Koonce was well loved and meant so much to our community.

I ask that you keep Sergeant Koonce’s family, friends, and her law enforcement family in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.

UPDATE: We are receiving more scam complaints from other churches. Remember, if you are contacted by someone asking for credit card information or you to purchase gift cards., it is more than likely a scam. please contact your local law enforcement office to report. SCAM: Bridgeton PD has received several calls referencing a scam that has come from United Methodist Church claiming to be the parishioners pastor. The person states they need gift cards for a sick women with cancer. This is a scam. No pastor from a church is going to ask you for gift cards and have them sent via phone. Please be aware of this scam. Below are several photos of how we handle situations such as this. As always stay safe and diligent when receiving calls and texts tha do not sound correct.

Craven County Government Offices will be closed tomorrow, Monday February 2,2026. That means no court or special services. The roads tomorrow will be slick with black ice. Please don’t travel unless you need to.

Also, just because the side of your truck has a 4x4 emblem doesn’t mean you are safe. Just like any piece of equipment, you have to know how to use it. Its not a cure for ice on the road
