We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Officer Koonce, who provided security for our stores and was a familiar, friendly face to so many of us. We are grateful for her service, kindness, and dedication to keeping our team and customers safe. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, and fellow officers during this difficult time.

Sheriff’s Office Mourns Sudden Loss of Deputy

It is with deep respect and sorrow that we announce the passing of Craven County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Margie “Nikki” Koonce of New Bern who died on May 15, 2026, at her home.

Sergeant Koonce dedicated her life to public service, faithfully protecting and serving her community throughout her distinguished career in law enforcement. Sergeant Koonce was well loved and meant so much to our community.

I ask that you keep Sergeant Koonce’s family, friends, and her law enforcement family in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.
