Lavender is one of the most commonly lost plants in home gardens β€” and the reason is usually pruning at the wrong place. πŸ’œ

The most important rule: never cut into the brown woody stems.

Lavender doesn’t grow back from old wood. Once you prune below the green growth and into the hard brown stems, that branch is finished. Too many cuts like that can slowly destroy the entire plant.

🌸 Spring (April / May)
Remove only winter-damaged grey tips and lightly shape the plant. Avoid heavy pruning at this stage.

βœ‚οΈ Early Summer (June / July)
After the first bloom fades, trim back about one-third of the fresh green growth. This encourages a second flush of flowers later in the season.

πŸ‚ Early Fall (September)
Give the plant one final light trim and shape it into a soft rounded dome. Then stop pruning for the year.

The goal is never a flat top or a harsh cutback. A healthy lavender plant should keep a full dome shape year after year β€” dense, rounded, and protected through winter. 🌿

Did you know New Jersey has a list of prohibited invasive species? In January 2026, the New Jersey Invasive Species Management Act was signed into law. The new law establishes a comprehensive framework and creates a permanent New Jersey Invasive Species Council to guide science-based policy, education, and management statewide. It restricts the unregulated sale, distribution, import, export, and propagation of designated invasive species while giving nurseries, growers, land managers, and municipalities realistic timelines to comply.
