Congratulations to Brighton Fire Rescue Chief Brycen Garrison on receiving the 2026 George Mazzotti Fire Chief of the Year Award!

Chief Garrison was presented with this prestigious honor yesterday at the Colorado Fire Leadership Challenge in Keystone, an annual gathering of fire service leaders hosted by Colorado State Fire Chiefs (CSFC) in collaboration with the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC), Colorado Professional Fire Fighters (CPFF), and the Fire Marshal's Association of Colorado (FMAC).

Established in 2012 by the DFPC, the George Mazzotti Fire Chief of the Year Award recognizes fire chiefs who have made extraordinary contributions to Colorado's fire service through leadership, innovation, integrity, and professional development.

The award is named in honor of George V. Mazzotti Sr., a longtime Adams County fire service leader and one of the original founders of the North Washington Fire Department. Mazzotti served his community for decades, retiring as fire chief in 1996. Even after retirement, he continued to serve as an advisor and mentor, leaving a lasting legacy of leadership and dedication to the fire service.

Chief Garrison was selected from 12 nominees by a committee of past award recipients, making this recognition especially meaningful.

We are incredibly proud of Chief Garrison and grateful for his leadership, dedication to our firefighters, and commitment to serving the Brighton community.

A small donation can make a big difference for a local family in need.

Brighton Fire Rescue is partnering with Almost Home Inc. for its Fall Resource Fair, and we're asking our community to help us collect food and personal hygiene products for families who could use a little extra support.

We're especially looking for nonperishable foods that are easy to store and prepare, including:

• Pasta and sauce, ramen, rice, and beans
• Canned vegetables and fruits
• Oatmeal and peanut butter
• Canned tuna or chicken
• Kid-friendly school snacks, such as applesauce pouches and pretzels

Personal hygiene products are also needed, including toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, deodorant, feminine hygiene products, and other everyday essentials.

We've made it easy to help! Donation boxes will be available at two Brighton Fire stations:

📍 Station 51: 425 S. Main St.
📍 Station 52: 124 S. 40th Ave.

For families facing difficult times, having enough food in the pantry or basic hygiene products at home can make a meaningful difference.

Brighton has always been a community that looks out for its neighbors. We're asking you to help us continue that tradition.

Yesterday at 7:52 am, Brighton Fire Rescue was dispatched to a structure fire in the 1900 block of Griffin Drive.

Crews arrived at a two-story home with smoke coming from a second-floor window. Firefighters pulled a hose line but entered and extinguished the fire with a portable water can. The fire was contained to the dryer, which was then removed from the home.

Firefighters used fans to clear the smoke and checked the home for any remaining hazards. They also made sure the family's four-legged member wasn't left behind, locating the homeowner's cat and bringing it safely back to its grateful owner.

No one was injured, and the home was deemed safe for residents to return.

Brighton Fire Rescue and the Brighton Police Department are teaming up for a little pre-Halloween fun!

Join us for the Badge & Axe Pumpkin Bash on Wednesday, October 28th! This event is geared toward kids and teens, offering an opportunity to enjoy pumpkin carving, Halloween festivities, and some time with their local firefighters and police officers.

We've all felt the impact of rising costs over the past several years, and the fire service is no exception.

Since 2020, the total cost of the personal protective equipment (PPE) our firefighters wear when responding to fires has increased by 75%.

That's a significant increase for equipment we simply can't go without.

Our firefighters rely on this gear to protect them from extreme heat, flames, and other hazards. But even with proper care and maintenance, it doesn't last forever. Under NFPA standards, turnout gear must be retired after 10 years, sometimes sooner if it's damaged or contaminated.

Just as families and businesses have had to adjust to rising costs, fire departments face the same challenges. And while the cost of protecting our firefighters continues to rise, the need to keep our community safe remains the same.

When our firefighters have the equipment they need to do their jobs safely, they're better prepared to respond to emergencies, rescue those in danger, and protect lives and property.

For us, investing in firefighter safety is also an investment in the safety of the community we serve.

A firefighter can carry 60 to 80 pounds of protective gear and equipment when responding to a fire.

Bunker pants, coat, boots, helmet, and radio weigh approximately 25 pounds. Add 20 to 30 pounds for their self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and another 14 to 18 pounds for an axe and Halligan bar, commonly called a set of irons.

Now imagine climbing stairs, crawling through tight spaces, or rescuing someone from a burning building while carrying all that extra weight.

Every piece of equipment serves a purpose, from protecting firefighters against extreme heat and falling debris to providing the breathable air they need in dangerous environments.

But this equipment does more than protect our firefighters. It allows them to enter dangerous environments, reach people who need help, and carry out rescues while reducing the risks they face.

That's why physical fitness, regular training, and reliable protective equipment are so important. The better prepared and protected our firefighters are, the better equipped they are to keep our community safe.

One of our crews recently spent time in our training center’s evolution building, working through two scenarios designed to sharpen their skills.

The first focused on forcible entry, practicing techniques for gaining access through both inward- and outward-swinging doors.

The second simulated a firefighter-down emergency during a basement fire. The crew practiced rescuing an unresponsive firefighter by moving them up a flight of interior stairs, a challenging task made even more difficult by the weight and bulk of firefighting gear.

These are physically demanding skills that require coordination, communication, and teamwork. Regular training helps our firefighters stay prepared when every second counts.

One week from today, Brighton Fire Rescue is hosting a Halloween event with a twist...TRUCK-or-Treat!

Join us at our Training Center on Friday, October 23rd, for an evening of Halloween fun, featuring a pop-up haunted house! We'll also have trick-or-treat stations, pumpkins carved by our firefighters for you to judge, and the Dog-N-It Chicago Style food truck on site.

This isn't your typical trunk-or-treat event with rows of cars handing out candy. We're putting our own spin on Halloween, with the haunted house as the main attraction!

We've received a few questions about what ages are appropriate for the haunted house. Since every child has a different comfort level when it comes to spooky experiences, we'll leave that decision up to parents and guardians when they see our setup.

Brighton Fire Rescue crews recently joined Brighton High School, SD27J's medical response team for a cardiac arrest drill focused on what happens before firefighters arrive and the critical handoff to EMS.

The exercise is part of 27J Schools' work toward becoming a safer, better-prepared district through Project ADAM. The national program helps schools prepare for sudden cardiac arrest by developing emergency response plans, training staff in CPR and AED use, making sure AEDs are accessible, and regularly practicing how everyone will respond during a real emergency.

As part of that effort, schools throughout the district will participate in cardiac arrest drills to put their plans and training into practice.

For Brighton Fire, these exercises also give our crews an opportunity to work directly with school response teams and practice the transition from immediate care provided by school staff to the advanced care provided by our firefighters and paramedics.

It’s training we hope is never needed, but preparation can make all the difference when seconds count.

A fire engine can spark a lot of curiosity, and the kids at Brighton Options Homeschool Enrichment Program had plenty of great questions!

One of our crews recently stopped by the program at Harvest Fellowship to spend some time with the students and give them an up-close look at Engine 51. The kids had a chance to check out the equipment, learn a little about what firefighters do, and get their questions answered by the crew.

Thanks to Brighton Options for inviting us out. We always enjoy spending time with the kids in our community!
