Bromley East Charter School

Bromley East Charter School Since 2001, we strive to become Colorado's premier Charter School. Our students, staff, and families create a lifelong learning community.

History of Bromley East Charter School

The Bromley East Charter School was an expansion of the 6-12 Brighton Charter School (BCS) community-based concept with the same founders and a similar educational philosophy. BCS was in its second year of operation as a 300 student, grade 6-12 program in 1999 when the founders began discussing the possibility of a K-8 school with the Bromley Park developer

Bob Lembke. They were confident that by tying into the success of BCS, a new school could be formed with a new building paid for through bond financing. Lembke and the founders originally hoped to have a charter building and a public school both constructed on a donated public school site. Each school would have its own classroom wing but would share common areas such as a library, gymnasium, cafeteria, auditorium, etc. The site would also include a 10-acre adjoining city park. The Brighton Charter founders had also formed a community-based non-profit board known as the Community Education Center (CEC) to serve as landlord and to offer political assistance for the facilities financing. All of the interested parties met for six months with the 27J school district administration trying to develop the shared concept, but the district rejected the plan because they could only afford to place a modular building on their segment of the shared campus, while the charter would have a permanent structure. The district needed voter approval to build a permanent traditional public school and it was confident that the approval would occur. At this point, the charter school group moved quickly to draft budgets and plans to build its own K-8 building. In February 2000 the BCS board and CEC acted on several fronts to establish a new school to open in the fall of 2001. These steps included:
Obtaining a new 31-year charter for Bromley East
Obtaining a 31-year charter renewal for BCS
Obtaining a 501(c)(3) status for the CEC and Bromley East
Establishing a partnership with the city to operate an adjoining 10 acre park
Hiring an experienced underwriter (Russ Caldwell, with Kirkpatrick Pettis)
Expanding charter budgeting to reflect a 10-year budget complete with debt service
Going through the Colorado Educational and Cultural Facilities Association for issuance of $12.8 million in construction bonds
Obtaining investment grade bond rating from Fitch and Moody rating services

After 8 months of very hard work and a lot of political maneuvering, the following was accomplished:
Built a new 88,000 square foot, 810 student K-8 school
BCS and BECS became the first charters in the state of Colorado to receive a 31-year contract and a 31-year contract renewal
BECS became the first “neighborhood” charter school in Colorado
The $12.8 million bond issued was the largest to date in Colorado for a charter school
The $12.8 million issuance for a charter through a community non-profit group (CEC) was the first of its type in Colorado
BECS was the first and only charter school in the nation to receive investment grade ratings from both Fitch and Moody

The school opened in August 2001 with Governor Bill Owens as the keynote speaker.

Greece/Italy Trip Days 4, 5 and 6
______________________

Bonjourno!

Sorry for the "radio silence" over the past couple of days, but we have been traveling a lot, and we have had some very late nights.

On Sunday, we went up to one of the monasteries in Meteora. The view from a distance looks terrifying, but the drive up there was extremely easy. So easy that Miss Neal asked if she could drive because she saw "Speed" .... twice. I was like, nah! The views were truly spectacular! It's hard to imagine that the whole region was covered in water, and that it was the water that made those formations over millions of years. The monks who started the monastery wanted to be up there so that they could be isolated from the rest of the world. Ironic that that thousands of people visit there every day now! The art that we saw in the monastery was truly incredible, and the views from on top were something that no one will ever forget!

We made a couple of other stops after that. One of them was in Metsovo. There, we visited a beautiful town that looked like it was straight from the Renaissance era. We all had time to eat and do some shopping. Then, our tour director, Panagis, took us to see his hometown. We were able to explore a castle and have some free time. Everyone had a great time grabbing snacks, shopping, and even playing in the local arcade. I had a great time beating our bus driver at pool!

Then we had quite a drive to the port. Not to mention that we were delayed even further. We eventually boarded our ferry at around 3:30 am. The students got to experience something that most people will never see. It just so happened that we were on board with about 300 Hells Angels. Watching them rev their bikes as they were pulling into the ferry's garage was pretty cool! Some of the students and parents were nervous about having them on the trip, but it turned out that these bikers were a bunch of gentle giants. Many of them were more than happy to take pictures with the kids and adults, and one of them even offered to pay for a smoothie for one of our boys. Very cool experience! We had breakfast, lunch, and dinner on the ferry. There were a few things for the kids to do, but they decided to entertain themselves by playing hide and seek with each other.

We eventually landed in Ancona, Italy, at around 9:00 pm. We had a long four-hour drive to Montecatini. We arrived at around 3:00 am, but we were able to sleep in a little bit. After breakfast, we headed to Florence. We met our local guide, who gave us a historical lesson on the area. We also ended up at a leather shop. Once we learned a little about Florence's history of making leather, we had about four hours of free time. Everyone had a great time exploring the area, eating the food (especially pizza), and stuffing as much gelato in our faces as we could! We met back up at 5:30, and we had a delicious dinner of pasta with alfredo sauce, some sort of puffy potato, beef, and finally, we topped it off with tiramisu for dessert.

We had a short drive back to our hotel. Everyone is heading to bed early because we have an early start tomorrow morning. We are taking an excursion to Orvieto, which is a beautiful medieval town. Then on to Rome.

Greece/Italy Trip Day 3-
Kalimera from Greece!

Today was a day of seeing some amazing sites and time to catch up on some sleep during a long drive.

After breakfast, we hit the road toward Delphi. We drove for about an hour and a half before stopping at the Greek version of Bucc-Ees to get some snacks.

More driving!

We stopped at one of the most iconic views that Greece is known for. We took some beautiful pictures of Arachova. We also had a local guide show us around some ancient ruins and tell us some mythological stories. We also visited the museum there.

More driving!

More snacks!

More driving!

I think you're getting the idea! We eventually made it to Meteora. We settled into the hotel and had dinner. Half of the group wanted to go for a walk to get ice cream and do a little bit of shopping. The other half of the group was content with just hanging out in their rooms.

Tomorrow we are going to the top to visit one of the monasteries here in Meteora.
Don't worry. The road up there is big enough for two vehicles to pass each other. Still, this will be an adventure the kids will never forget! Our bus driver says that it looks a lot scarier than it is. 😊

Καληνύχτα!

Greece and Italy Trip- Day 2

Wow! What an incredible day! After having a delicious breakfast at the hotel, we headed to the Acropolis. We heard very interesting mythological stories about Athena and Poseidon. It was incredible to walk around ancient ruins that have existed for thousands of years. To see firsthand how the founding of democracy came to be really made an impact on all of us. We visited the Temple of Athena Nike, and we saw so much more!

After that, we had a little bit of free time to grab a bite to eat for lunch and do some souvenir shopping. The food here is delicious, and some of the souvenirs are .... interesting!

Then we made our way back to the Acropolis Museum to see artifacts that have been around for thousands of years. The most interesting thing about this museum is that it was built on top of ancient ruins. Most of the floors are made of glass, and you can look down on top of the ruins. There was an entire village, complete with homes, shops, and many other things, right underneath the museum! Pretty cool!

We had a little bit more free time to grab some ice cream and snacks before heading back to the hotel for about an hour and a half. Most of us were able to take a quick nap, which was desperately needed!

Our evening turned out to be an experience that, I believe, will live in the memories of the students for the rest of their lives. We were treated to an authentic Greek celebration. We started by taste-testing olive oils with bread. It was so delicious that some of us are bringing bottles home! The patio had an incredible view of Athens. You could see for miles and miles in all directions! Even all the way to the Aegean Sea. Once the celebration was ready to begin, we listened to a Greek band that played some very traditional music. They even had dancers putting on a show! Then it was time for a quick lesson in Greek dancing! Everything was going well until one of the dancers knocked a tray of plates onto the ground. Before you knew it, everyone (there were serveral other groups with us) had clay plates in their hands. What a sight to see HUNDREDS of plates being smashed onto the ground all at once! So much fun! Obviously, someone had to clean up, so they chose eight men to have a competition to sweep it all up! Our very own Andree represented well, and he was one of the four champions! Then they took the chamions an several other guests away to get them dressed up in traditional Greek outfits! More dancing and more music. Dinner and dessert were a buffet of many different types of food. By this time, it was dark, and the view from the patio, with Athens all lit up, was spectacular!

After a short ride back to our hotel, we all got settled in, and I hope that everyone is sleeping soundly.

We are only on day two, and we have had such a great time!

Greece/Italy Trip - Day 1

From Mr Olmsted:
First of all, I can already tell that this is going to be an amazing group. Everyone has been on time for everything, listening to our guide, and very excited to be here.

All of our flights were on time, very uneventful (which is great when you are 35,000 feet above ground!), and overall, not too long of a flight. We even arrived a little bit early to Athens.

From the airport, we went straight to a beautiful beach on the Aegean Sea. Everyone had a lot of fun playing in the ocean, relaxing on the sunbeds that were provided, and having a very delicious meal.

It took a little bit longer than expected to get to our hotel, but once we got there, we all go checked in, freshened up a little bit, and relaxed for a few minutes.

Then it was off to dinner around the corner. We were served delicious bread, a Greek salad, baked chicken, and potatoes. For dessert, we had a Greek delicacy that is kind of like a sopaipilla but long and skinny and not puffy. Served with honey and powdered sugar.

After dinner, we walked around town for a little bit, and we had some free time. Most groups bought treats like ice cream and pastries.

Now we are all back in our rooms and ready for a good night's sleep after a long day.

Look for another update tomorrow night!
