The Peninsula Pulse ran my statement today on this month’s lame duck session. Although Governor Walker signed all of this legislation, vetoing nothing, we have much to be optimistic about going forward.

For the first time in 8 years, progressive values have a seat at the table. A Governor who puts people first will have a say in criminal justice reform, investing in our public schools, our infrastructure, and our environment. And with a Democratic Governor in office after the 2020 census, the people of Wisconsin will get fairer legislative maps.

The acts of the lame duck session are neither forgettable nor forgivable (and will likely remain top of mind as they make their way through the courts), but let’s use that angst, anger, and adrenaline to fuel our fight for quality of life improvements for all Wisconsinites, regardless of party affiliation, hometown, or favorite Wisconsin supper club. Forward.

By Sen. Caleb Frostman Almost a week removed from an overnight lame duck session in which the will of Wisconsin voters was thwarted by Republican legislators, I finally feel like I’ve caught up on rest. Now fully recovered, the conflict-averse Wisconsinite in me wants to let sleeping dogs and lame...

It was a long night but I am so proud of and grateful for the work my Democratic colleagues did to ardently defend Wisconsin's democratic traditions. I am also proud that after 17 hours of debate and caucusing, I had the opportunity to speak on the Senate floor just before 7:00 this morning about why this lame duck special session was an assault on our state and hostile to democracy.

If I ever have progeny to regale with tales of my time in the Wisconsin State Senate, the stories will be bittersweet. I’ll proudly show them my name on the wall of Senators in the State Capitol and declare that serving the great people of the 1st Senate District is the greatest honor I have ever known. But I will have to tell them that my only session day was truly extraordinary in its depravity, brazen arrogance, and willful thwarting of the will of Wisconsin’s voters by the Republican majority at the time. The passage of these bills hoarding power into the legislative branch is a shameful disgrace to the progressive tradition of Wisconsin’s national leadership in embracing true democracy. You can watch my floor speech from early this morning here: http://www.wiseye.org/Video-Archive/View-Video-Clip?vid=16185&start=03-57-25&end=04-02-36&fbclid=IwAR1gLOlaa13zlLx7ra9TmOzj1LONHaCHR-9Uj1AOvGqs6oPGBjGINvUE1rw

"Unlike the tradition of a peaceful transfer of power, and unlike President Bush’s humble words of encouragement to incoming President Clinton, the bills proposed by Speaker Vos and Leader Fitzgerald are hostile to democracy, display the petulance of children denied their third piece of birthday cake, and reek of supreme arrogance." Read the entirety of my release on this undemocratic lame duck session below.

As a Wisconsinite who has been fortunate enough to be successful in the deer woods every once in a while, and has thus found himself shoulders-deep in entrails nearly three dozen times since turning 12, I have a strong stomach. However, reading these bills on Friday evening immediately made me queasy and weak in the knees.

If this unprecedented power grab has sickened and angered you as much as it has me, please call your Assembly representative, as well as Speaker Vos, Senate Majority Leader Fitzgerald, and Governor Walker’s offices to let them know that this aggression will not stand. Their contact information is below. For the sake of our democracy, I implore you to be vocal and persistent. If you are able, I would also encourage you to visit their offices in the Capitol on Monday morning. If you can’t make it in person please follow along on www.wiseye.org, it’s important that they know we are all watching and won’t forget.

I was very happy to swing into Door County Economic Development Corp.'s second annual Door County Manufacturing Days this morning to visit some of our District’s incredible manufacturers. I am proud to have been part of the team that implemented this event for the first time last year and hope it continues for many years to come!

Please join State Representative Gordon Hintz and I as we host a Foxconn Town Hall event in Sturgeon Bay! This event is a great opportunity for Northeast Wisconsin residents to meet with state lawmakers, learn more about the taxpayer liabilities associated with Foxconn and comment on recently identified environmental risks of the project. Hope to see you there!
