Today’s rescue call started like all the others in the past. The tones dropped and the voice on the other end called for rescue. This automatically puts us in a completely different mind frame than other calls. We immediately know someone needs us there as fast as we can safely get there and ready to do everything we can to save them. We have to harness our adrenaline and get to the scene to go to work! We train hard for this but the truth is a mock scene, classes, or training scenarios don’t fully prepare us for the real thing.
Today it was different in one way. After 30+ years we geared up and headed to the scene in a new truck. Truck 2 has served this area for over 30 years as a lifeline to people on some of their worst days ever. That old truck has carried many generations of firefighters to scenes they will never forget and for a lot of people seeing that truck pull up gave them hope that their nightmare would soon be over because of that truck and the firefighters in it.
Brinkley Fire and Rescue has served as the only rescue unit in Monroe County for a long time and Truck 2 has been the backbone! As we pulled out of the station today in our new truck, Rescue 5, we left a legend at the station, once a workhorse just sitting there now with empty boxes and memories of lives saved, lives lost, and firefighters that gave everything they had regardless of the outcome.
The story has not completed ended for Truck 2 though. We will be attempting to convert it into a brush truck and keep it in service. There have been many firefighters in those seats and many lives saved by that old truck but it was time to give it a rest.

After the wreck early in the afternoon our crew all went back to their day but at 5:42 the pagers went to screaming again. These pagers usually make everyone in the room jump. Lol! We were needed just north of town for a car on fire. We responded with Truck 1, Truck 7, Tanker 343 and 7 firefighters. Truck 1 arrived on scene first, at 5:53 and let us know that there were no visible flames but something was too hot. Truck 7 arrived and went to work on cooling everything down. Something had caught on fire in the dash and was still smoking heavily. We got it all cooled down and we’re headed back to the station at 6:23 to take care of our equipment.

Today was a busy day for us, the heat made it even worse! We were paged out to a rollover wreck with entrapment at Henderson Corner around 12:26. We responded with Truck 1, Rescue 5, and Truck 7 with 6 firefighters in tow. Truck 1 arrived on scene at 12:31 to assess the situation. He informed the incoming crews that everyone was out of the vehicle but we were requested to continue to the scene for concerns that a fire may start. We picked a few out of the 6 responding firefighters to stay there and monitor the situation as the tow company went to work, the rest were sent back to the station. The scene was cleared at 3:22 and we were all back in service.

One lane is back open and they should have both lanes of highway 49 open soon.

Highway 49 South is shutdown at Henderson Corner in both directions. You will have to find an alternate route if you were planning on using it.

Today is more than just a holiday. This is a special day to remember those who sacrificed everything to defend our freedoms and our great country. As you go about your day and the activities you have planned don’t forget the true reason for today being a holiday. At 3:00pm take that minute, known as the National Moment of Remembrance, to honor the fallen and reflect on their sacrifices. Today is so much more than backyard barbecues and other gatherings, this is a day to remember and honor those men and women that gave their lives for each of us! Thank you to all who are gone but not forgotten and Happy Memorial Day to all.

Well, we had us a little late night run tonight. This time it wasn’t a fire but at 12:40am we were called out to a residence with carbon monoxide alarms going off. We responded in Truck 1 with 2 firefighters and Truck 7 with 2 firefighters and our gas monitor. We checked everyone out and ran the gas monitor through the house to make sure it was safe. The family opted to spend the night somewhere and get things checked out at the house later today. Everyone was ok and we were ready for the next call around 1:20am.

Here’s a short video from today’s fire from FF Mitchell’s helmet cam. Excellent work by the entire team. This is from one side of the house and we had another line working on the other side. Safe, effective, and smart work shut this fire down quickly!

Today at 12:26 our pagers went to screaming at us while some of us were working and some of us were trying to enjoy our lunch breaks. We were called to a house on fire with smoke coming from every door and window. We responded in Truck 7 with 3 firefighters, Tanker 343 with 2 firefighters, and Truck 8 with 1 firefighter. Truck 7 arrived on scene first at 12:35 and relayed to everyone that the fire had already vented through the roof and the house was fully involved. They attacked it immediately with a front attack hose. Tanker 343 got on scene shortly after and we laid 5” hose to the nearest hydrant, pulled a 2nd attack line, and fired up the deck gun. Truck 8 arrived in time to assist with all of that. In total we had 6 firefighters on scene and were able to knock this fire out by 1:19 and begin cooling the hot spots. We returned to the station, took care of all of our equipment, and were ready for the next call at 2:15. This one was hot and rolling when we arrived but thanks to our training and hard work we knocked it out quick! Good job to all!!!
