🚑 What is a paramedic sprint car?

As Brinnon Fire Department, Quilcene Fire Rescue, and Discovery Bay Fire Rescue continue exploring a regional Advanced Life Support (ALS) service model, one question that may come up is: what exactly is a paramedic sprint car?

A sprint car is not an ambulance. 🚗 It is a smaller response vehicle designed to bring a paramedic and advanced medical equipment to serious emergencies.

The local ambulance still responds. 🚑 The local EMTs and firefighters still respond. 👨‍🚒 The existing transport system still remains in place.

The difference is that a sprint car can bring paramedic-level care to the patient when advanced care is needed. That may include advanced assessment, cardiac monitoring ❤️, airway support, medications 💊, trauma care, overdose care, respiratory emergency care 🫁, and other time-sensitive interventions.

For rural areas like South Jefferson County, this concept is being explored as one possible way to improve access to paramedic-level emergency care while supporting the emergency services already in place. 🌲🏘️

This project is still being studied. 🔍 No final decision has been made, and no funding has been confirmed. The goal right now is to better understand whether this model could help improve emergency care access across our rural communities. 🤝

🚑 What Is Advanced Life Support and Why Does It Matter? 🚑

Brinnon Fire Department is currently working with Quilcene Fire Rescue and Discovery Bay Fire Rescue to explore a proposed South Jefferson County Regional ALS Pilot Program.

ALS stands for Advanced Life Support. In simple terms, ALS means paramedic-level emergency care. Paramedics can provide advanced assessment, medications, airway management, cardiac monitoring, advanced treatment for respiratory emergencies, advanced trauma support, overdose care, stabilization, and triage.

The concept being explored is a shared paramedic response unit, sometimes called an ALS sprint car. This unit would respond to serious medical emergencies and support the existing ambulance services already provided by each district.

This would not replace local ambulances or change the important role each fire district already plays in transporting patients. Brinnon, Quilcene, and Discovery Bay would continue their current EMS response and transport roles. The ALS unit would provide an additional paramedic-level resource for time-sensitive emergencies across rural South Jefferson County.

This project is still in the feasibility and development stage. No final funding source, employer structure, or final operational model has been established.

The goal is simple: to better understand how we can improve access to paramedic-level emergency care for Brinnon, Quilcene, Discovery Bay, the Hood Canal corridor, and our rural communities.

We will continue to share information as this work develops.

Today we honor all the moms, grandmothers, stepmoms, foster moms, mothers-in-law, and mother figures who give so much of themselves every single day.

🔥 Jefferson County 2026 Fire Season Update 🔥

Jefferson County has declared a MODERATE Blue fire danger level for the 2026 fire season, effective Friday, May 8, 2026.

This designation is being implemented early due to current weather conditions, observed field conditions, and increasing fire risk.

At the MODERATE fire danger level, the following are prohibited:

• Burn barrels
• Land clearing fires
• Yard debris burning
• Sky lanterns

Recreational fires, including campfires, are still allowed when used safely and properly. Barbecues, grills, outdoor fireplaces, portable fire pits, and chimineas may continue to be used as long as all safety requirements are followed.

Portable fire devices must be placed on a noncombustible surface, or the surrounding area must be cleared down to mineral soil for at least 1.5 feet. Only natural wood may be used, and all fuel must remain fully inside the device. Fires must be constantly attended until completely extinguished.

The MODERATE fire danger level is expected to remain in place until at least September 30, 2026. Conditions will continue to be monitored, and restrictions may increase as the season progresses.

Please help us protect our community, firefighters, emergency responders, homes, property, and the natural beauty of Jefferson County.

Know the rules. Use fire responsibly. Stay safe, Brinnon.

🩺🚒 Cadet Program Training Update 🚒🩺

Yesterday, our Brinnon Fire Department cadets completed First Aid and CPR training. This training is certified through the American Heart Association, and while our cadets refresh these skills annually, their certification is good for two years.

These are the kinds of skills that matter, whether they are used on a future emergency scene, at school, at home, or out in the community. Early CPR and first aid can save lives.

Great job, cadets. You showed up, worked hard, and took another important step in your training.

A big thank you to Justin Matheson, Brady Matheson, and Crystal Manly for assisting with the class and helping make the training a success.

Strong work, everyone.
