🎃 Spooky fun is just around the corner! As you prep your porch or plan your party, here are a few things to watch for:

🕸️ Fake spiderwebs and other decorations can catch fire fast—keep them away from candles and lights
🔥 Skip the real candles in jack-o'-lanterns; battery-operated ones work just as well
🍳 If you're cooking for a party, stay in the kitchen. Unattended stoves are a leading cause of home fires

💨 Ever wonder why Bay Area wildfires get so much worse in the fall? Meet the Diablo winds.

These are hot, dry winds blowing from the inland valleys toward the coast, and they peak right here in October. As they drop in elevation, they heat up and dry out, with gusts potentially reaching 40-60+ mph or higher.

That mix of heat, low humidity, and strong wind is exactly what lets wildfires spread fast and grow hard to control. Some of the Bay Area's most destructive fires, including the 1991 Oakland Hills fire and the 2017 North Bay fires, were driven by Diablo winds.

When Diablo winds are in the forecast, take them seriously: watch for Red Flag Warnings, keep your Go Bag ready, and know your evacuation routes.

A period of elevated temperatures is expected from Sunday through Thursday. Please take precautions to protect yourself, your family, and your pets.

Drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous activity during peak heat, and spend time in a cool or air-conditioned location when possible.

Remember to check on older adults, individuals who may be especially vulnerable to heat, and pets. Never leave children or pets unattended in a parked vehicle.

Take precautions. Stay informed. Stay safe.
