If you don't hail from Bristol, Rhode Island, you might not understand why we make such a HUGE deal about July 4th. Of course, it is our nation's birthday, and who doesn't love a party? But we boldly proclaim that no city or town celebrates it bigger than Bristol.
Few fun facts about July 4th here in this wonderful seaside town. We host the OLDEST parade in the America, beginning in 1785. It goes on through rain, shine and often...extreme heat.
People take the parade VERY seriously, and while technically"illegal", you may just catch someone lining up their lawn chairs at 3 AM on July 4th to stake their spot to watch this 4 hour parade.
Marching bands, law enforcement, military, and veterans travel cross country to be a part of the parade. It's broadcast live nationally. The traffic to get in and out of town rivals Los Angeles. You better know someone who lives on the route, or get on your bike if you want to get into town because that's the only way to get out.
Concerts, a carnival, a July 4th Ball, flag lined streets, Miss Fourth of July pageants and parties. This is a week long Mardi Gras of sorts here and what better reason to indulge than by honoring this great country.
People wish you a "Happy Fourth" just as they would "Happy Holidays" in December. In Bristol, this time of year really is (if not bigger than) Christmas in July.
You know it's time to get excited when the parade route street lines are freshly painted good ol' red, white and blue.
So THIS is why we make such a big deal about the Fourth of July. Shop our annual sale and take 20% off anything redโค๏ธ, white๐บ๐ธor blue ๐ until 7.3.15 (because of course we are closed the next day๐).
