Goodson Kinderhook Volunteer Fire Department

Goodson Kinderhook Volunteer Fire Department Goodson Kinderhook is a Career/Volunteer Fire Department that has been proudly serving 110 sq miles

In early 1967 some active volunteer Firefighters with the Washington County Volunteer Fire Department No.1 along with several community members realized that there was a need in our community for an organized Fire Department. Most of these early discussions took place at Ray Ball’s Trading Post located at Burson’s Corner, ( now the Country Corner Market), on Benhams Road. Property for the Main Sta

tion was deeded to the then name Washington County Volunteer Fire Department No. 2 on March 27, 1967. When preparing to apply for the Certificate of Incorporation with the Virginia State Corporation Commission it was decided then to change the name of the new Fire Department in order to better describe the area of Washington County Virginia it would serve. Since the new Fire Department would be serving the Goodson Magisterial District and the Kinderhook Magisterial District of Washington County Virginia, it was decided to name the Fire Department the Goodson-Kinderhook Volunteer Fire Department. With redistricting in Washington County and the decision to rename the seven Magisterial Districts after the seven Virginia born United States Presidents, the Goodson-Kinderhook name became a very unique name for the Fire Department. With the closure of the Goodson-Kinderhook Water Works when it was incorporated into the Washington County Service Authority, the Goodson-Kinderhook Volunteer Fire Department became the last remaining County entity or organization retaining the names of the two former Magisterial Districts.

Great to see there are no State lines or boundaries when it comes to helping and receiving help on a fire scene.

State drought data shows abnormally dry conditions for Washington County. Just today, the County Fire Departments have responded to 5 small grass fires. The windy weather, dry grounds and remaining debris from Hurricane Helene are all concerns.

If you see an open fire in the county, please report to central dispatch by calling 911.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

February 27, 2024

Former Virginia Intermont Structure Fire

Bristol Virginia Fire Department firefighters were dispatched to the old Virginia Intermont College campus this evening (2/26/2024) at approximately 5:02. A caller reported seeing smoke coming from one of the old buildings on campus.

Crews from all three Bristol VA Fire Stations responded and a call went out to Bristol, TN Fire-Rescue for assistance.

First-arriving crews had difficulty locating the fire as it was burning deep inside one of the large buildings. Crews entered the large building that housed the swimming pool and discovered a fire burning in the actual swimming pool. Apparently, trespassers had set fire to rubbish and it appears the fire got out of hand. The fire created a large amount of smoke which made it impossible to breathe. No one was found inside the building.

Fire crews stretched hose lines into the building and extinguished the fire. Additional crews accessed the roof and opened sections of the roof to ventilate the smoke. The fire was contained to the pool. There were no injuries reported. The fire is being considered suspicious.

While crews worked to control the fire at the VI campus, a second structure fire occurred in the City on Magnolia Dr. Fire crews from Goodson-Kinderhook Fire Department and Bristol, TN Fire-Rescue responded to the second fire. Crews arrived to find a small fire in a dryer vent opening outside of a home. Thanks to the work of neighbors, the fire was quickly extinguished and caused only minimal damage!
