Our Story
The Dreadnaught Hook, Ladder, and Hose Company Number 1 (which is commonly referred to as “Ladder 1”, “Dreadnaughts”, or “The Dreads”) is one of 4 fire companies proudly protecting approximately 23,000 residents living in a 10.1 square mile land area as well as 10.5 square miles of water for the Town of Bristol, RI.
The Dreads are the busiest company in town, with at least one of our three apparatus (Ladder 1, Truck 6, and Marine 1) responding to all structure fires, smoke conditions, fire alarms, CO alarms, motor vehicle accidents, hazmat incidents, water rescues, ice rescues, technical extrications, as well as other emergencies
As the "Black Sheep" of the department; The Dreads are the only company in town that does not operate an engine. However, our station is home to engine 4 "Fog Squad" which operates as a squad separate from the four companies in town, maintains its own officers, holds separate meetings, and consists of handpicked members from all four companies. (Dreadnaughts, Hydraulions, Ever-Readys, and Defiance)
