Today we celebrated the Dedication and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of the new Fire Station 3.
From 1679, when the Boston Fire Department was established to today’s celebration, the fire service has evolved over time. One constant remains though, the fire house. It is our home away from home, we live here, 24 hours at a time. What you will see in this new facility is the care and attention that was taken to make it a home. From horses to 600 horsepower engines, buckets to 1,000 gallon per minute master streams, the fire service has made technological advances by leaps and bounds. Another constant throughout time is the fact that courageous men and women risk their lives for their neighbors by running into burning buildings. This fire house allows for those heroes to rest and recuperate in a clean, modern facility, ready for the next call for service.
Some history on Fire Station 3. The original Welch Fire Company was organized in 1880 on the corner of Church Avenue and Twining Street and was the center of the community until it was destroyed by fire in 1884. In 1885, the Welch Fire Company house was rebuilt and rededicated to serve the Forestville Community where it was named the “Old Firemen’s Hall.” Many community events from church dinners, dances, fairs, and bazaars were hosted there. The Forestville Boys and Girls Club was born there, and the Forestville Basketball team played on the second floor. In 1962 the building was torn down and replaced by a building of “modern materials and design to carry Forestville into the new and challenging future of the space age.” Since 1962, Station 3 housed Engine 3 all 58 years.
The new Fire Station 3 is a modern, technologically advanced, and functional fire house that will serve the Forestville Community for another 58 years or more.
I want to thank all who played a vital role, both past and present in this investment to the city’s infrastructure and those who made this happen. Our city Administrators, City Council Members, Board of Finance Members, Fire Station 3 Building Committee Members, Board of Fire Commissioners, the Project Team, our Bristol Firefighters, Families and Friends, and the Bristol community for working together to make this happen.
