UPDATE: Great news! Ross Hughes is going home!
After weeks of critical illness, there is encouraging news to share regarding Ross Hughes. Family members say Hughes has shown enough improvement that he will soon be released from the hospital and return home, where he will continue his recovery under family care. While his journey is far from over, loved ones say the progress is a significant step forward.
Hughes, a lifelong Washington County resident, is a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and longtime public servant. He has served the community for 26 years as a firefighter and EMT with Goodson Kinderhook Fire and Rescue, spent 10 years with the Bristol Life Saving Crew, worked with Abingdon Ambulance Service, and currently serves as a youth pastor at Solid Rock Church.
Hughes was diagnosed with kidney disease in 2018. His condition worsened after contracting COVID-19 in 2020, and he began dialysis treatments in 2023 while continuing to work toward a kidney transplant.
Recently, Hughes became critically ill while traveling to a dialysis appointment and was hospitalized in the ICU, where he required ventilator support. His wife remained by his side throughout his hospitalization and has been unable to work during this time.
The family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of community support, including prayers, meals, financial assistance, and messages of encouragement. They say the support has been overwhelming and deeply appreciated.
While Hughes’ condition has improved, the family notes that recovery will be a long process and ongoing medical and financial challenges remain. Community members are asked to continue keeping Hughes in their prayers. Those wishing to help can find a link to the family’s GoFundMe in the comments.
